Let me just put it to you simply...

If my kids grow up and do not enjoy metal or classical music but instead feel the need to blast some hip-hop crap in my house, they will know what it means to be disowned and homeless!

Joking aside, I'd just tell them to respect what I like and don't like, and in return I'll respect what they like and don't like. No reason to make a huge fuss over it.

Aaw, look at you all being accepting of your spawn's indifference to your hobbies. NOT ME THOUGH!

Rule No. 1 of my hypothetical household: Thou shall playeth video games!

I lack the ability to bond with smaller human beings if we're not doing something electronic and button mashy. Also I pretty much ooze gaming from all my pores so if my hypothetical cum sprout doesn't like them, then its not mine! The missus probably cheated on me brought back some other bastards spawn mumblegrumble.

but yeah, gaming is just one of the 5 things my child must like for me to not consider tossing them out and re-rolling a new one, because honestly I have a massive disconnect with my dad and if I had a kid the same disconnect continued then I'd probably be sad as hell.

I don't give a crap if people don't like what I like. The point is that I like it.

I would be disappointed, but I'd take an interest in whatever they end up liking. As long as it isn't the England rugby team, boybands, or murdering the innocent, I will be happy to listen to them talk about what they like.

If they like gaming and Batman, I will be one happy father. If they're cooler than me, I might just get a little bit jealous.

It'd be nice if we shared some common ground, but I'd still be ready to make a cringe-worthy attempt at sports if it meant I could bond with my kid.

If i had a son and/or daughter I'd show them some of my anime and manga and stuff like that, and if they liked then we could do that stuff together, but if they didn't like it then no big deal they find something else they were into and i'd support them and try to understand it a bit to show i care about their interests. My niece and nephew for example love anime ever since i lent their father, who is my cousin, some Fullmetal Alchemist and Bleach anime dvds. Now they always beg to watch Bleach as soon as I lend my cousin the latest DVD box set of Bleach i get. It was never forced in them though, me and cousin watched it,they saw it and said they liked it and wanted to watch more of it.

I wouldn't have a problem with them not liking the things I like.

I would have a problem with them liking the things I hate though. Not because of the whole "You're wrong for liking that!" thing, but because I'd likely be exposed to the things I hate on a much more regular basis.

I might be slightly unhappy about it (not sure 'disappointed' would be the right word) but they would be free to like what they wanted. So long as they had good taste in music and hated football. There'll be none o' that pop shite or fitba' in mah hoose!

I'd say they're free to watch what they like... so long as it's something I can get into. But then I'm not realy a fan of any of the big fanchises and so such, so if they hated Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who, whatever, I don't see the appeal either.

Just personal preference.

I'm gonna be honest with you. To me, manga and geekery take up even more of my time than Jesus takes of my little brother's time, and he's a devout Christian. So here's a pic of what I'd look like if my little Akira (which is what his name would be regardless of what his mom says) wasn't into nerdery:
