America can never be the bad guys. So your point is mute.

Your move Escapist, tread softly
I would love to see a slightly in the future game where the US is rallied around an evil cause. It has happened in the past, well not so much to the US, but you get the idea. It would be interesting to see how they portrayed the US, with it being the power house it is.

I was reading about MW2's plot recently and realised that it is so anti-Russia that it isn't funny. Do any Russians find it somewhat hard to shoot your own men in the face?
Would any of you not play a game where you opposed your own country?
You're making the assumption that everyone is as rigidly nationalist and/or culturally homogeneous as you are.

My family comes from one country, I was born in another, and yet, I grew up and live in another country altogether.

Which one should I be not okay with "opposing"?

I would love to see fellow Aussies being the bad guys. They'll be too busy watching sport and taking weekends off to hang out with mates too much to effectively take over the world.

Hmmm, i don't know of any games that pitch Australia as "the bad guys" (recommend one for me if there is) But i wouldn't mind if it was well executed and not just blatant hatred for us.

Iv always wondered if German kids played any of the old call of duty games. ya know, the ones that rehashed the second world war so many times I think I could go into a veteran's home and relive my Normandy experience with Corporal Flashback.

I wouldn't have a problem if Australia was the villian in a war game.

But I would really like a game where my country was the evil force taking over the world where I got to control my countries armies. That would be fun.

Sadly, no. I always play as the good guys, and always fight for the "good guys" so which ever side was more towards "good" I would fight for (me being american, tough choice)

A semi-realistic shooter set against America, where the plot is American expansionism, combined with the fact that they produce more food than any other country, with a ridiculously large army and bases all around the world allowing for a simultaneous assault across the world?

Yes, would be fun.

I don't really believe it'd be possible. There isn't really any such thing as a "bad guy", just an entity that opposes yours. Even the "bad guys" think that their side is the "good guys".

If any type of game let you know that you were fighting FOR the bad guys, any person in a real situation might say, "Hey. I don't think this is right," and switch sides. For example, the Czech wants to wipe out every single bunny for no apparent reason, other than getting everyone's knickers in a knot. Actually, some people may do that just for the fun of it. Bad example.

The point is, an inner feeling of well doing would most likely set off some kind of bell, likely making the player not want to participate.

It is not like I am killing actual people, so who cares what the game says their origin is. Their origin is the binary cloud that runs all electronics.

I know this is for fun, but it's pretty much true, though.
Individual Americans are not questionably aggressive... although their foreign policy from 1945 on has been.

personally, I have a huge problem with any country being so beligerent.

I would argue that the "War on Terror" should have been lead by the US intelligence communities as opposed to the military.
I know it's all very well to have the benefit of hindsight, but there were serious misgivings by a lot of insightful, intelligent rationale Americans about the war for good reason.

It's just a shame that yet again the American people and the rest of the world have to pay the price of the hubris of a few in Washington.

As for the actual topic's question...

I really can't see the Irish as being the bad guys in a video game.... maybe as a spoof...

EDIT

Ok, odd game analogy... Splinter Cell, to my mind offered the best effective means of combatting the type of modern terrorists- Intel all the way.

The word you're looking for is moot.

America wouldn't be the bad guys, more like the bad guy's easily-led dupe. It would only bother me if it was presented as a black and white issue. A second American Civil war would be rather interesting as a game.

Know which country will never get portrayed as a villain in a mainstream release? Israel.
It's a joke guys...
Lighten up.

Especially this. It sounds like you hate politicians, not Americans. And believe me, no on here likes the government.

This is a difficult question to answer, not because I am a patriot or anything but because saying a country is the bad guys sounds like it means all citizens of the country are the bad guys.

Yes, I would play a game where my country is seen as evil but I would like it to be shown that people in the country have different opinions and that not everyone supports the bad guys.

Depends on the context, if they portrayed the entirety of my homeland as some sort of new Third Reich run by cartoon super villains, then no. But there are whole truck loads of ways to portray any given country, including mine (America if you must know), as the "Bad Guys" without portraying either side as someone you'd likely find in a Saturday morning cartoon or a South Park episode.
In fact that would be a wonderful change of pace from all the "America saves the world again" crap that gets dumped out from the medium. Hell, most of the reason I love Call of Duty games (Especially 4 where you play a British operative most of the game) is because you don't play exclusively as an American.
