a random stranger?
a friend?
your best friend?
a family member?
your significant other (if applicable)?

Example scenario if you aren't imaginative enough: You and said other person are captured by an insane serial killer. He says he'll let the other person free if you sacrifice yourself to him. Would you do it? (EDIT: Just to be clear, suppose there is some magical way that you know that the killer will do what he says. Like perhaps he lets you watch the other person leave, and then kills you, or something of that sort. You know what I mean.)

(I've seen this asked before, but just wanted to combine all possible ranges of people into one poll.)

My friends and family, I'd sacrifice my life to save any of them. Hell, maybe I'd even sacrifice myself for a random stranger if I was feeling charitable that particular day.

Any/All of the above?

a) It's the right thing to do.

b) If I chose to save myself, my guilt would be utterly overwhelming, and may result in my suicide.

If I'm suicidal that day I'd probably do it for a random stranger, or anyone I know. I'd do anything for my best friend on other times.

The survival of the entire human race. Exactly how many/who that would entail saving is admittedly rather vague, so I hope I can figure it out at the time. But I'd prioritise myself over a country's worth of people.

As for all my loved ones, no matter how much I love them, I wouldn't die for them. I'm addicted to life. I'm not a people hater, I'm even almost a philantrophist, but I will refuse my own death at pretty much any cost.

My friends. People I'm close to or who hold a special place in my heart. Family... But probably nobody else.

My little brother.

He means everything to me. Wouldn't be able to cope if he wasn't here. Would sacrifice myself for him without a second thought.

For someone I truly love, hell yeah. However, I don't really have any of those any more...
As for the example scenario, it'd completely depend on the circumstances. If the other captive has a family for example.

For a family member.... no.
For my country.... fuck no.[footnote] Clarification: I would not give my life for the side of the government, the rich, the greedy or anyone in jail. They simply don't deserve it. I would however, give my life for the poor, the downtrodden, an innocent or society assuming there was a chance something good could be made of it. See also the last point above.[/footnote]
For a friend.... It would really depend on the friend.
For a loved one... I would need a loved one for this to apply but I don't see why not.

For an idea.... Yes.
I would give my life if it meant something. If there was a chance that something good came from it or something changed for the better because of it.

I've never been in that situation so I can't say what I would or wouldn't do, or if I would even react the same way in two different scenarios where the stakes are the same.

I'd like to think I'm pretty heroic and self-sacrificing, but then what I think I would do and what I would actually do are likely very different things. My response would probably vary greatly depending on the day it happens and the mental state I happen to be in as much as anything else.

I'd like to say yes, but that's easy saying now... it's completely different when I'm staring down a barrel. Let's never find out shall we.

Sure,
Yeah,
Of course,
Of course.

But yeah, it's just the right thing to do. That, and I'm not really afraid to die, so yeah.

I would give my life for anyone save for the asshole next door and the slut that ditched me for him.

I fucking hate those two so much.

Otherwise, though, I'd give my life in a heartbeat to save someone else's. I personally believe that my life is worth inherently more than the average person's (top 2 percentile intelligence AND extremely fit, with very few delirious genes), and so giving my life would be a fundamental misdeed for humanity as a whole, but selflessness is a principle that I have, and would, if followed by more people, benefit humanity far more than myself alone could.

Ah, but isn't saving an innocent life (I probably wouldn't bother for a serial killer, either) a very good thing all in itself? One could argue. :)

My wife and kids that is all.

Nearly gave my life for a close friend in my army days and it hurt like buggery so i'd rather not do that again.

As for a total stranger .... not a hope in hell. I wouldn't cut off a toe for a total stranger never mind sacrifice my life.

A friend .... again, nope.

A best friend .... nearly did one like I said and it hurt like a ***** and now i've got physical problems so bugger that ever happening again.

A family member .... if it's not my wife and kids then nope. I'm just not that close with my family. We rarely see anyone from mine or my wifes family. I see my sister at Christmas when she comes to drop off the kids presents and pick up my neices, we don't even buy for each other. My parents I see once in a blue moon. Don't speak to any of the others at all. My wifes family live in Weston Super Mare and never come up to see us and with her job she never gets time to go down there so hasn't seen them for over 8 years. Wouldn't die for any of them.

As I said, i'd only give my life for my wife and kids anybody else can swing from my hairy balls while I sing along to Agadoo.

That's kind my point in my edited post. Giving my life in a situation where both parties will die anyway is pointless.

Say, for example, standing in the way or a murdering gunman intent on killing everyone. Unless I could be absolutely certain that if I took the bullets that he wouldn't kill the person I was defending then great. But there's no point if 10 seconds after I'm taken down. The person I'm defending is then gunned down.

However! If there was an armed gun/knife wielding guy robbing a stranger in an ally, then I would tackle said armed man as I know that there would be a good chance that the stranger would run away and survive and get help.
