Would you use a teleporter?

If technology of that level ever becomes commonsight/reality, I'll just modify my genetic structure to grow wings so I can fly and use that instead of teleportation.

well, by modifying your genetic structure to grow wings, it would either take a long time for the to grow and be quite painful, (did you ever have growing pains as a teenager?) or happen very quickly and be excruciatingly painful. unless of course this was to happen in a doctors office or something, and some sort of sedative was used. i'd prefer a jet pack, myself. would be a helluva lot faster and less tiring, unless they gave you some sort of metabolism modifying gene as well, which would mean eating ALL THE TIME to supply the energy needed. unless of course...*goes on forever*

OT well, yes. i don't believe in any sort of "soul", i believe we are a construct of molecules working in a fantastically complex way, and even if the teleporting process was simply to scan my molecules and then send this data to another transporter which then rebuilds me using the same molecules (any molecule of any particular pure substance is identical, at least that is if i understood me chemistry class correctly) in the exact same structure, and then disintegrating the first me, i'd still do it, because, from my point of view, all that happened is i moved from one place to another.

i don't see anything ethically wrong about this, unless maybe the first me felt pain while being destroyed, nor do i see anything dangerous, unless the power were to go out during the process or the signal to be interrupted, so this process would need numerous fail safes to be safe, but if it was proven to be at least as safe as say driving the freeway, i'd do it.

They show up in all sorts of science fiction, and they usually have one thing in common: Their process involves either converting you into some sort of energy, or breaking you up into particles, then reassembling you at the destination. Now while they are obviously others, MANY use this model.

As in to go back in time or just to travel?

Be awesome for travel. no more baggage fees or long drives!. Not to mention how much money you save no more expensive plane/train/bus tickets. Never have to pay gas for a car, or car payments/insurance.

I would prefer the whole mage portal or hearthstone idea since there is no upkeep and little to no cost for setup.

While it does kill you, it brings you back just as you where before you left (unless, of course, you decide to go into the teleporter with a fly) instead of making a new you. Your energy, which one could argue is the living portion of you, remains intact, instead of being replaced, so therefore what comes out is you, not a clone.

But how would they know? Every time Picard would use a transporter, it would destroy him and create an exact copy somewhere else, with the exact same thoughts and memories. As far as the people operating the machine are aware, the transporter was a complete success, and the duplicate has no idea that he's not the original.

I don't get why you put "as far as they know it was a complete success" without ever explaining how that would be an incorrect assessment. If he's exactly the same as the original Picard but in a different place in space-time, it's a success.

The original Picard is DEAD! It wouldn't be disassembling his atoms and sending them somewhere else. He'd be destroyed on the subatomic level and the machine would create a new one at the specified location! If you kill someone and replace them with an exact copy, the former is still dead

It depends if you subscribe to mind-body dualism or not. If not, then it doesn't matter because your soul, consciousness, etc. are based on physical atoms and their arrangement.

If not then presumably you'd need a teleporter which could teleport all the supernatural stuff as well as atoms.

I thought I'd interject here. We don't even need to resort to "supernatural stuff" for that argument to work. What I mean is that all the particles that make you up don't just hang in one place. They are in constant motion. Even if we had technology allowing us to record the position of each and every particle in our bodies - and I don't think that will ever be possible - reassembling them in the same conformation would just give you a neatly assembled mass of stationary particles, i.e. a corpse. You'd probably also need the technology to also record the specific energy and vector of each of the particles and somehow transmit that as well - and somehow do it in a short enough time for them not to change in the origin.

Bottom line: you cannot stop an organism's functioning and restart it. Suspended animation still involves metabolic functions going on. And no, Venter's group didn't "create life" earlier this year, whatever the media might have said.

Like I care, I'll just make an exact clone of myself, and make the changes to him during his (excellerated) growth. Even if I would have to die. I could always download my conscience to the clone-body (yes that was in a movie). And though that would pretty much mean that "I" die, I'd be willing to make that sacrifice; it's for the survival and awesomeness of the being known as 'ME'(...) Or maybe I should seek out a psychiatrist, what do you think?.......

P.S.: I'd rather go through excrusiating pains to grown wings and get an awesome mutant body-thing, than use instant teleportation and get fat like the people from Wall-E or something.
