a recent study has proven world of warcraft to be more addictive than crack cocaine. the study was conducted after a swedish boy had convulsions and needed hospital treatment following a 24 hour non-stop gaming session. what are your thoughts on this and do think this applies to other MMO's or even gaming in general?

Really? More addictive?

Then I guess I'll never get a real addiction. Thank God.

It's a hell of a drug.

Really, though, i think addictions apply more to the individual than the substance. After all, nto everyone who smokes becomes a chain smoker, and in fact there's some who can quit smoking with little to no effort. If WoW is addictive, it's just to those who like it a hell of a lot to begin with.

The real addiction is your social connection to the game. If WoW were single player, you think it would reach the level it has now? You become so socially intertwined with it and it's hard to let all those friends go, thus the addiction factor of the game in my opinion. It's what made leaving so hard for me, and what makes me want to clamor back to the game like a regretful whore begging forgiveness.

Maybe if he had stopped to eat and use the bathroom he wouldn't have fainted. People need to learn how to organize their addictions, and you know... Put down the mouse and keyboard and eat some lunch.

Video games are only addictive if you let them be. You just kind of suck at life if you get seriously addicted to a video game.

Well games can't be addictive in the same way as cocaine and the like are as they don't intoxicate you, but they are addictive in their own way.

Assuming this is real at all, the kid probably was epileptic or just didnt eat for a while. And if you're playing a game to the point of being HOSPITALIZED, i think you might consider going outside once and a while.
As for myself, i've yet to be hospitalized so outside be damned ^-^

I used to be a vice-cop and i can say only a few things are more addictive than crack. Falling over from forgetting to eat and poop isn't addicted. It means he's an idiot. I don't think I know anyone that would fillate someone with AIDS to play WoW for few hours. I don't know anyone that would rob a house to get the money to play WoW. I doubt anyone would murder their best friend with a kitchen knife for hogging the last bit of the WoW account before it runs out.
I am not saying it's not addictive but saying it's MORE addictive than crack? Please, that's ignorant.

I too would like a link to this 'study'

Outside be damned lol

I play wow when I'm at home in the middle of the night to pass the time when I'm not at work. Night work fails for trying to sleep at night lol

Dubble pozt is dubble.

Anyway, I'm...skeptic. I played WoW for years, sometimes for days at a time, but once I stopped playing for a few days, I never felt the need to do so again.

I'd bet he had some pre-existing medical condition, frankly.
it's ok Ed...
We can sort this out by talking about it

Basically that. Games can only be addictive if you let them be, just like I said.

I have no faith in these kinds of studies because they always omit details that show just how unscientific they really are.
