I'm brand spanking new to WOW. I got booted from the game, and my passowrd no longer worked. The login page said that the password could have been stolen. So I changed my password, and went back online. Ten min later I was booted and banned for spamming. (and I have never done that)

Anybody have a similiar story? I have just emailed the admin...but nothing has changed. What did you do to fix the issue, and how long did it take to fix? Any compensation? And does this crap happen a lot?

I would recommend ringing the customer support team, I believe the number is free (Though I haven't rang them myself in over 18 months, bear with me). Now I understand we here have only your side of the story, but explain this again to the customer representative on the other end and you should recieve some form of help (Making a thread here is only good for advice, we can't physically help unfortunately mate!)

Good luck with it.

Edit for atrocious spelling.

Two of my friends had this happen to them. Both were hacked by spambots to advertise gold farming sites or some such.

I think they called customer service and both were back in action in a couple days.

This happened to my brother, he got it solved everything back and all, so he got hismelf that code thingy as extra password protection for his account. In a way I got that too, downloaded the app on my ipod, free though;)

Bad luck though, getting hacked and banned that fast after entering WoW.

Your password got stolen.
You reset it.
You login.
You're banned for spamming.

Okay.

Step 1: Format your PC. I'm serious. Format it. Let EVERYTHING in ALL your hard drives, not just your Windows one, ALL OF THEM, let it all burn in hell. Odds are you have a trojan horse the size of the statue of liberty, and no matter how many times you manage to get unbanned and reset the password, you'll keep having your account stolen.

Step 2: Contact customer support, talk to them about this, they'll probably unban you after you certify you're the account owner and all that.

How long it takes to fix? depends on how much the people that stole your account tampered with it. Could be hours, could be well over a week.

Compensations? for a mess that's most likely your fault for allowing god only knows what crap into your HDD? No chance.

Does this happen a lot? Depends a lot on the user. I've played for 5 years intermittently, never happened to me. But I know people that had it happen to them 3 times in a single year. Best way to avoid it from ever happening again, is to surf smart.

I still have the foolproof excuse that it would just murder my computer.
That always works

I'm clutching at straws now and sticking with bankrupcy.

I have never had anything like this happen to me. Its a combined comp with my wife and my stuff. I need the information on it as much as she does.

I'm not, and good look with the account. If for whatever reason they don't tell you to, do a full system scan with your virus protection if you already haven't.
Again, good luck.

I had a similar thing, you've been hacked mate. Some hacker farmed 32000 gold through my account. Needless to say I told them my character's realm etc, and everything was good. This was about 6 months ago, and the number was free :)

All those people that suddenly find themselves unable to log in to their account, only to see it happen 4 more times in the next months, had also never had anything like this happen to them. Until then.

If you have a keylogger, no amount of customer support will help you know.
This. Or a trojan. Lots of baddies around the internet right now that specifically target WoW accounts.

If you're not up for a format, I suggest you get a good antivirus as well as Spybot Search and Destroy. If you already have a virus, get rid of it and get a better one.

Never happened in 5 years of playing WoW. Thank goodness too, because the amount of junk I had, and still have, on my account would put a would-be hacker in shock due to the vast quantity of wealth and rare stuff on it.

Okay. What you should do (insofar as securing your computer and WoW account; others have advised you how to get your account back):

1. Immediately do a full virus scan with a trustworthy online scanner (it's possible that your AV program, if you have one, has been compromised). I recommend this one [http://housecall.trendmicro.com/].

2. I strongly recommend following the steps in this FAQ [http://www.dslreports.com/faq/13616]. It is an exceedingly thorough step-by-step guide in getting the vast majority of nasties off your hard drive.

3. Ensure that you have quality, up-to-date security software. One each of an active antivirus, antitrojan and firewall program is a good step; using periodic full scans from a second backup program is better. If you really want to be on the safe side, look into HIPS or whitelisting programs- sometimes a hassle, but a great way to make your computer practically bulletproof.

4. ONCE YOU HAVE CONFIRMED THAT YOUR SYSTEM IS CLEAN, change every last one of your passwords everywhere. There's no telling what else might have been captured by the keylogger.

5. Get an Authenticator. Seriously. Not only is it a difficult barrier for hackers to overcome, but it prevents them from placing an authenticator on your account should they gain access to it (this has been a growing trend, and makes regaining control of your account MUCH harder). If you have a smartphone, there's probably an Authenticator app you can download for it so you don't have to buy the keyfob.

6. If you use an automatic add-on updater (like Curse has), remove it. I've been seeing a LOT of people getting compromised by Curse add-ons. For extra precaution, delete all of your add-ons and reinstall them manually from known-good sources.

Getting hacked is never a good thing. I wish you luck.

No necessarily. Lots of crap have wow-targeting trojans and loggers.
