I just installed WoW, TBC, and Lich King, and I just bought a "license" online that came with a 30 day free play pass. I have all expansions installed, and the game is patched all the way up. I logged in, went to character creating, and I tried going to a Belf race because I like that one the most.

I hover my mouse over the picture and it says "requires The burning crusade to play".

WTF?

I clearly have Burning crusade and Lich king installed. I didn't go through all the hassle of paying for the play-time and installing the games just to get lynched.

What's the problem?

Yeah you have to get them activated on battlenet. The good thing though is that whenever you need a game you can just download it off battlenet instead of relying on CDs.

Why does blizzard make it to where you have to activate it online when you already purchased the game and have it installed?

Probably so you can't pirate the game, they are pretty good at securing their games. Not really sure on things people have tried to do or could do to get around not buying all the expansions, perhaps they could have downloaded an expansion and used a keygen in installing, or had a friend install the expansion using their discs, plus you could install it and play it for 10 days without buying the game at all if I'm not mistaken.

You can also buy the games online on battle.net too so it's just an insentive to make the game easier to get a hold of and requires more work to pirate, so that more people resort to just buying it. Though people will prolly still pirate it and run private servers...
