There are a lot of tech savvy people here I think. So I pose a question to you. I just downloaded and then installed WoW. I double click on the desktop shortcut. I try to click play but it is grayed out. It says downloading patch at the bottom. And then it crashes about ten seconds in. It just shuts down. I can't find the problem. Any ideas?

Again, the hilarity that is WoW bashing ensues. Seriously, if you have nothing to provide, then just leave it.

Have you checked the troubleshooting tips on the website? Sadly, thats the best I have for you. I prefer cds to digital downloads.

Probably doesn't help much, but...did all of the patches download before you tried playing?

If Its a disk then I would ask the store to exchange it for a different copy but If Its a digital download then consult tech support for the website you got it from or check WOWs website to see if someone else has had similar troubles.

The support website will sometimes direct you to a file called WoWRepair.exe, its an auto repair tool that checks all the WoW data and downloads it if its wrong. Could be worth a shot, failing that I'd go grab a disk from somewhere, theres usually loads of trial ones around.

Re-download and reinstall... and if you're using vista you'll want to do this on your administrator account.

1. try downloading the patch from a web site. blizzard has several sites that they list in there troubleshoot page (worked for me once)
2. go into thw WoW files and click on Blizzard repair
3. if all else fails, reinstall it

Download the patches manually from fileplanet, fileshack or your ISP's mirror and install them that way.

Here is what you can do. It's a PitA, but it's worked for me, and I've re/installed WoW no less than 20 times on my computer, my wife's computer, several friends' computers, and even my mom's comp!

Uninstall WoW completely. Make sure you delete the 'World of Warcraft' directory as well. Depending on which version you have, it will sometimes leave the /interface and /wtf directories.

Once you start from scratch, the trick is to install WoW, and then reboot between every patch. That will clear your temp directory and the system cache, so, if Blizzard named any temp folders in a later patch the same as they did in an earlier patch, you won't be picking up erroneous data.

Obviously, you'll save yourself a LOT of time if you get a 3.0 client install disk. I don't know if that's possible, however. Me: I just install my vanilla client, then tBC client, then WotLK client, and only then rely on the downloader for patches.

Try EVE Online. When you're finished with EVE's 21 day trial, completely uninstall the WoW client and redownload and reinstall it from the site. Then try WoW. Give your subscription money to whichever game you enjoy more.
