WoW Patch 3.3 "Fall of the Lich King" Goes Live

It's the beginning of the end to seven years of Warcraft lore as Patch 3.3 hits servers today, bringing players to the Lich King's fortress of Icecrown Citadel to meet Azeroth's ultimate evil face-to-face.

If you played 2002's Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, then it's likely that your jaw hit the floor at the conclusion of the game's Human campaign when you saw the cinematic embedded below - I know mine sure did. The campaign told the story of the fall from grace of Loradaeron's Prince Arthas, who fell into madness as he sought to save his people, before being consumed by the sacrifices he was willing to make and turning into the very thing he'd fought against. Arthas' tale would be continued in the rest of the campaigns as well as the expansion, 2003's The Frozen Throne, which ended with the Prince becoming the King: The Lich King, to be precise.

Since WoW launched five years ago, that's been the major question on peoples' minds. When we fought Kel'Thuzad in Naxxramas at Level 60, we were asking ourselves, "When will we fight Arthas?" When we fought Kael'thas Sunstrider in Tempest Keep and Illidan Stormrage in the Black Temple at Level 70, we were asking ourselves, "When will we fight Arthas?" And when we fought Kel'Thuzad (again) and Malygos in the Eye of Eternity, we were still asking ourselves, "When will we fight Arthas?"

As it turns out, the answer to that question is "today."

Well, okay, not really. Though Patch 3.3 - the third and final major content patch of World of Warcraft's second expansion - goes live today and brings with it the Lich King's sanctum of Icecrown Citadel, we won't actually get to fight the Lich King himself just yet. Similar to how progression was "gated" in Sunwell Plateau, the final raid of The Burning Crusade, the raid will open up piece by piece over time.

Right now, only the first four bosses are available in the Lower Spire, and it will be a couple of weeks before raiders get to take on the next three in the Plagueworks, a few more weeks before we get to hit up the Crimson Hall, and then still more before the grand finale at the Frozen Throne, where raiders will face down Arthas as well as the Frost Wyrm Sindragosa (the one raised in the fantastic Wrath of the Lich King opening cinematic, in case you were wondering).

But, the patch still has a ton of extra stuff in it beyond the progression-capped raid. There are three new dungeons in Icecrown Citadel meant for groups of five players, with Horde and Alliance alike getting to fight alongside lore figures who have a slightly more personal interest in the Lich King - Sylvanas Windrunner and Jaina Proudmoore, respectively.

Patch 3.3 further introduces cross-server instances and the new Dungeon Finder feature, which is at long last a group-finding tool that actually doesn't suck - five years late, but better late than never, right? There are also a ton of improvements to the quest tracking system and in-game maps, the requisite class balance changes and bug fixes, and best of all, new level 1 characters no longer have useless food and water cluttering up their inventory. A comprehensive list of all of the changes can be found at WoWWiki [http://www.wowwiki.com/Patch_3.3.0].

Fans of the Warcraft series (like yours truly) should be having a nerdgasm right about now, because holy crap guys, Icecrown Citadel! I'd say "see you in the raid," but since we all know that the servers will be broken for the next three or so days, that probably won't happen.

No, no, this is just the end of the lore that has been pre-written. There is already another expansion to be released (tentatively) third quarter next year.

Uh, did you miss the whole thing about Cataclysm?

This is just the end of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. It's certainly a close on an era of WoW, but the game's by no means over.

Soooo...has Arthus been sitting there this whole time? I mean thats the ending to the Frozen Throne...but how do they play off his absence this whole time? I mean Saruman took a while to summon an army, but Arthus just summoned a dragon like its no big deal...

Does the WoW universe start you off before Warcraft 3?

QQ: If i where to make a LVL 1 character right now, how much time invested in quests, lvling up and getting to know the game would it take me to be able to even enter the expansion of the lich king?? (counting of course the previous expansions of the game)

Ah righto. Didn't think they'd be that daft.

Yeah, because I don't follow WoW news that closely and misread some of the info.

Probably close to 24 hours of straight playtime without help (i.e. a 80 friend to beat down everything that might think about killing you). This doesn't count profession training or anything else that might slow you down.

Not that long. You could probably be level 70 and get to Northrend in a matter of weeks. Of course, getting to know the game inside-out would take a bit longer, but there's always handy newbie guides for that.

It wouldn't take too terribly long if you applied yourself, really. I think that it takes a good 6 days of play-time to reach 80, and then a bit longer to get gear and learn your class. As to experiencing the entirety of the expansion, I can't even find PUGs who raid Naxx anymore on my server, what with all the welfare epics given out. If you wanted to give it a try, I would be willing to bet that you could hit 80 and get geared with a good four months left until Cataclysm is given a set-in-stone release date.

I still hold that up as one of the most awesome pieces of gaming cinema ever :p

Good luck to Ensidia and STARS for World-Firsts. The gated progression will screw it over somewhat as it did for SWP, but it'll still be interesting to see how it happens.

WoW starts four years after the Frozen Throne. I believe each of the expansions counts as a year as well (Burning Crusade is 5 years after Frozen Throne, WotLK is six). As for what Arthas has been doing, wrestling with the internal conflict between himself, Ner'zhul and his more innocent self as well as building up his army and fortresses and whatnot.

He's not been doing nothing at all in Azeroth, he did send Naxxramas down at the end of vanilla WoW.

Ah Arthas, I'm going to kill you in a few months. It will be fun.

Bring on Icecrown, both my priest and my death knight are ready for it. :D

I need to download this patch when I get home.I can't wait to get Shadowmourne as a weapon. But, I also don't believe Blizzard would let the Lich King die so easily to a group of 10/25 raiders.

I know it would take around 5-6 days of play to reach level 60, and that was before the patch that greatly sped up the rate at which you gain experience. By 5-6 days i mean at total of 120-144 hours. This of course makes some assumptions, mostly knowing the game fairly well and being efficient at questing (there are quite a few leveling guides that show good quest paths to take and which areas to visit.). Beyond that another 4-5 days for the first expansion i guess, but I've not played WOTLK at all so no idea on time needed to get to the very top.

Admit it, killing the lord of the undead for whom all suffering and destruction originated will be awesome and you know it.

Didn't "Wrath" come out about a year ago? What took them so long to finish it?
Blizzard did not release this raid initially because they wanted Arthas to be the "final" boss of the expansion. If he was out in the beginning, they would have either needed to put in other content later (like naxxaramas or Ulduar), or no content at all.

In contrast to the last expansion, The Burning Crusade, Illidan was meant to be the "final" boss of that expansion. Blizzard released him too early, and needed to put in another patch with the sunwell content to tide over their users until the new expansion came out.

It also meant that they got to conclude the Kael'thas story in that expansion rather than carrying it over to this one :p
