I promise this is the last time I'll talk about this, Godzilla has a trailer now that won't be taken down by Warner Bros. It's, well see for yourself:

I think the dominant sequence of the trailer will be one of the most mind blowing of 2014. Wish we could hear a section of the actual soundtrack and have some idea of why they feel that a bunch of guys jumping out of a plane would help matters, but what can you do? I do wonder what is up with the flares though, so they can keep tabs on each other? It does ooze with art film though based on my only other experience with the genre, The Immortals (kick-ass movie by the way). It also came with a new poster:

That isn't important though so I'll leave the rest up to you guys.

Edit: Might I just say I'm surprised that I beat the entire Escapist to this news.

Teaser is a little boring. It does that thing where the music goes into a spastic crescendo and then it suddenly becomes silent for a few seconds THREE times. No trying much there.

I was waiting for the blaring horns that have been so ever-present in movie trailers recently, but thankfully they did not show! Huzzah!

Pretty good though, and it's certainly looking like it's not going to be as goofy as the 90's one, which is a huge plus...but trailers have lied in the past so we'll have to wait and see.

Firstly I liked Emmerich 1998 Godzilla. It was fun and interesting to watch.
Secondly, the only part of Pacific Rim I liked was the monster design.
So from that, this looks quite interesting. The monster looks kinda dull and the family-orientated plot that was suggested has bored me already, but having a more military side than before is cool because those guys are often shown as idiots in films like this.

Oh, what's so wrong with setting Godzilla in a Japanese or even Chinese setting? Does it always have to be iconic American cities that have to be destroyed? I loved Pacific Rim because the city that was getting destroyed was Hong Kong, and we've never seen that, and it was great!

The trailer didn't try to sell me on much, but of course it's goddamned Godzilla, everyone already knows Godzilla.

Probably not going to see it.

Oh Cojo, you don't have to lie to us that this is going to be your last Godzilla thread. Like EN's MLP threads, we have come to love your obsession you have on Godzilla :D

As to the trailer itself, I am, as usual with teaser trailers, cautiously optimistic. I watched Godzilla all the time as a wee one. While not great, I did enjoy the 'merica version (namely because Jean Reno can do no wrong) and am curious to see what they can do with the franchise. Pacific Rim has shown us how it's done; now make with the magic Godzilla.

No clue what's up with the flares though...

I agree completely. On the other hand, Godzilla did tend to roam throughout the world and wreck many American cities as well (especially in the video games). I'm hoping that this will scale across multiple cities worldwide, but considering the fact that almost everyone in the trailer was white...

Well I read somewhere that there might be a sequence in the movie taking place in 1954, the chronological first Godzilla attack. So maybe they will have their own version of the first attack to set the movie up. I've also heard that there will be scenes taking place in Japan.

Oh my goodness, I am so excited, I can barely stand it.
Please
PLEASE
PLEASE be good.
Anyway.
I like the darker tone they're setting with the trailer, hopefully the movie has this same sort of feel.
I don't know, I feel some people won't like it being *that* dark but I think it's pretty cool.

Um, in either the original or Raids Again hadn't they figured out that even though the monster was nocturnal it would follow light, so they used strings of flares to lure it away from cities? The flares might be to lure the creature to where the soldiers are--hopefully away from civilian populations.

I half-expected Godzilla's signature roar to be replaced by BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Because yes, that's the way these things seem to work.

This trailer looks pretty meh, though. If not for a few seconds of Godzilla, t could be any modern disaster movie.

Okay first let's kinda rip off the film Reign of Fire in the teaser trailer. Also all my life film makers and film aficionados have been trying to convince me that the Kaiju films like Godzilla matter. To this day I remain unconvinced.

The title did not disappoint, that certainly was a thing. The whole Godzilla thing was a bit before my time, so I have nothing to compare it to. Hopefully that means I'll enjoy it.

I think all the blacks and minorities were too busy suiting up in them Jaegers! (LOL)

OT: I'll still watch it when this movie does come out... But, I'm not going to lie to you and say I wasn't trying to make as many Pacific Rim jokes as I could without thinking about that ONE comment thinking that this was going to be a boring Halo movie... as I kept hitting the replay button a few times after the teaser was over...

As long as Godzilla doesn't get it's ass handed to it after the shock wears off it should be worth watching.

The very first film matters as an excellent piece of post-war commentary. The climate in which Godzilla was originally conceived wasn't even a decade after WW2, and Japan was still reeling after having the single most devastating act of warfare in all of recorded history being perpetrated on them twice. Because of this, Ishiro Honda and Toho decided to make a movie about the horrors and devastation of nuclear war, not just a monster tearing shit up. Godzilla doesn't actually appear that much in the original film, and when he does, he's like a slow moving nuclear explosion, decimating people and leaving wastelands in his wake. The intent of the first film wasn't just supposed to be fun schlock, but to show the dangers of violent ambition on both sides. It's not just the west being criticized in this film, but also the Japanese themselves for courting this kind of apocalypse.

That's why it makes me kind of sad that people are disappointed that this movie looks to focus on the human element, instead of Godzilla just shit-kicking another gargantuan beast. It's as if people have all drastically forgotten what Godzilla is supposed to represent at the end of the day.
Exactly my point. I know all that about what the original "Gojira" film was SUPPOSED to represent. In my not so humble opinion, it didn't do a very good job. And in fact spawned a long series of films that in actuality are self mockery of Honda's original intent. And all "symbolism" aside, and again in my not so humble opinion, these are terrible films, full of hackneyed writing, acting and special effects. They are nothing but that eras cheap Michael Bay explosion porn popcorn films. And sadly as you pointed out, THAT is the real Kaiju legacy for most viewers. Cheap tawdry mass destruction porn, not a parable of the self destructive forces of mankind.

Oh dear sweet jeebus, let this franchise die... We keep rebooting this in the wrong way, we keep bringing up the wrong themes and we keep treading the same name for different monsters. Make kaiju, sure, but DO NOT remake Godzilla. It's 50 years too late.

Let's even just look at the logic of the trailer. We know that SOMETHING takes out a large city, we may not know what... and our answer is dropping 5 guys with no effective equipment out of an airplane. What are we trying to do, feed it?

I'm fine with boats, I have nothing wrong with boats or ships when they're in their place in the water (or since this is part disaster movie, falling over or crashing into the Washington Monument) but the robots are what I have beef with so don't even get me started.
