Working hard at something and getting better at it is more rewarding then being inherently good at it. This is something we should all have a limited degree of understand of as people who enjoy video games.
In the past I had great difficulty afford to me thanks to being dyslexic with many different things. Reading out loud has always been very difficult because of the amount of time i have to take to process each word makes my reading out loud very stilted and awkward. I worked hard at finding other ways to read and better yet, memorization, I have since gotten very skilled at memorizing things said out loud or entire speeches. In college I once had a professor try to dock me points because i didn't use any note cards. Until I explained that I'm better off that way. Obviously this ability to repeat things verbatim has come in hand in my career as a detective.

Currently, I'm working hard at being a better... creative writer. I was fair at it once, but that part of my brain has atrophied from years of writing police reports where everything must be cut and dry, just the facts, straight to the point, chronological. I tried writing my perspective of LA Noire, as an actual detective i thought it would be interesting to folks, but I can't seem to get the transitions right, or stop from going on tangents.

I really want to practice and write a family biography detailing my grandfather, uncle, father and myself. This is well beyond my abilities.

Any people that have made actual money writing have any general advice?

General question: What is something you struggled with but were able to overcome via practice and hard work?

That is a good question Captcha... Magic anywan?

Nothing. I am perfect in every way.

No but seriously I had one criminal justice class in college. I'm one of those jerks that normally sits in the back of the class messing around on his laptop, not paying attention at all. To make matters worse I'm also one of those jerks that, even when hes not paying attention, can answer any question the Professor asks (usually to try to embarrass me) without looking up and get As on all work. (This is my friend's description. I never actually thought about it but he would get...annoyed because I would sit next to him not paying attention but get better grades.)

That is until this one class. The problem is this particular class had a great deal of memorization involved. I am good at picking up facts and figuring out answers based on those facts. However, not paying attention does not help when the work is nearly all memorization.

I bombed the first test. I mean totally bombed it. I think I got a 55% and I usually get high 90s. Well that was a wake up for me. I studied a lot for the next two tests getting 95 and 93 respectively. After the second test my Professor actually commented on it. He asked me if I studied or what and I basically told him what I said above about not needing to study in most classes (He said his wife is the same way and he would have her proof read his papers when he was going for his Master's.) He said it was a nice surprise because most people end up getting lower grades on the second test but mine went up by forty points. He knew I didn't cheat too because I sat in the front row, right in front of him, for the test.

I also completely destroyed the person I had to debate against for our final project. The winner of said debate would get a free 2 points on their final grade. (The debate was on media violence so I picked video games as the crux of my argument and argued against the idea that media leads to violence.)

Anywho, long story short I started the semester with the lowest grade in that class and when it was all said and done I had the highest grade.

Criminal Justice / Sociology were my majors for my BS. There is a lot of memorization in humanities classes for sure Cuz it's just tons of facts and statistics about the system. Good on you for getting thru it i saw a lot of people quit classes after the first test in college. Which is a waste.
