So for a very long time, I was a fan of the game series the settlers. In many ways it was a fun and unique game that required space management, production management, creativity, skill, and a pinch of resource management. At the time I first found the series it was the first game I played where you had no direct control of the "settlers" and you could only tell them what you wanted done, while making sure you did enough to keep them happy so that they would do what you requested.

It had its charm and its fun and again was fair unique in the RTS area which for the most part favors micro management. I feel like it reached it pique with settlers 4, after which point they decided to make the "settlers" more robotic and focus on hero creaters that you controlled directly, probably in and effort to compete with WarCraft which was a popular RTS rather than a RPG at the time.

I bought and played 5-7 all of which I felt were getting progressively worse. When the settlers online came out, I resisted it for a really long time. Then I broke down and decided to give it a try.

What did I find? I barely diguised skinner box that only Zynga could be proud of. Ubisoft and Blue Byte took an IP that while not hugely popular did well enough on its own and created what looks a feels like a rip of version publish by a company trying to get you hooked with skinner box techniques and then rip you off when you got tired of waiting for artificially long timers.

I am happy to say, I've logged in for the last time and I never spent a penny on the damn thing. I am just so sad that the IP came to this.

Evil Genious
Dugeon Keeper
Settlers

R.I.P you brave but oft forgotten heros of a unique gaming experience.

:) perhaps it is appropriate the the CAPTCHA for this post is "bitter end"
