WTF Impulse!?

So I go to buy SotS 2 on Impulse and spend a long time installing it only to be prompted by another installation sequence but through steam. Why am I installing the same game twice!? Why is Impulse even using a rival like this?! How is this a good thing for anyone?!?!?

I didn't even know it was a cluster fuck as I have yet to play it.

Yeah, it is certainly a little odd. But hardly Impulse that can be blamed, D2D and Gamersgate are the same and weren't going to turn down the extra cut by being a distributor.

If anything, blame Kerbeos for putting a game that requires steam available on digital platforms that aren't steam. I can't hold it against them, as it only increases their visibility to gamesr, but it is rather annoying for anyone using these other services specifically because they don't want steam.

And I don't really get what the deal is with the double download either, but there are so many other fuckups you quickly forget about it.

In any case, you're better off not bothering right now anyways. The game is broken and incomplete. It will likely be fixed and improved over time but right now it doesn't even qualify as beta quality. (And this is after they accidentally release a beta version and have since supposedly put up the release version, still unplayable crap)

Yes, but you are safe to remove it from Impulse once it's safely installed on Steam.

I got caught out by this once with Modern warfare 2. Installed it off the disk, loaded up Steam and then had to reinstall it via that.

Ever since then if a game I need requires Steam I just put whatever CD-KEY I get straight into Steam and install it with that instead of using any other crap they tell you too.

If you need to do this but don't know how, just hit the games tab at the top of your steam client, then hit 'Activate a product on steam' and follow on screen instructions.

Thank you! I'm living abroad and steam cant seem to grasp the thought so I cant by any of their game from it, but your solution is elegant and still keeps everything on steam which is what I wanted.

I tend to put the code in from digital download games, but use the disc with retail. It's slightly quicker that way unless you have an amazing internet connection and/or a really crappy optical drive.

Ok what is SotS2? Not helpful I know but it's hard to tell what game your talking about, even though everyone else here apparently knows

Edit: Found it, Sword of the Stars II, at least its release doesn't appear to be as bad as Stronghold 3s

I knew something like this would happen when they got bought up by Gamestop. I liked Impulse because it didn't have any of the bullshit steam does, and now they make you install steam as well? bah!

Hmmm... makes me wonder what happened to Impulse Reactor (started as an alternative to Steamworks)? Looks like Gamestop, if they got it in their purchase of Impulse, dropped it and just went with continuing the digital distro network...
