OK, I posted here because I seriously need help. I got this laptop for christmas, the " and @ are swapped around, # has replaced the pound sign and there is literally no pound sign. ~ has also been cunningly misplaced. Can anyone help?

the keys are physically swapped or the buttons are giving the wrong character?

find keyboard layout if the latter

The latter, and the pound sign, which I use often, is just missing.

Smaller laptops don't have full QWERTY keyboards. Space dictates that some keys need to be repositioned/omitted. One of the most common examples is the omission of the number pad for space.

I've had that problem and there is a simple solution of using the keys... sorry but i can't remember what it is. Its a bit like "num lock" sometimes causes problems (i think its that one). Or sticky keys. Argh they are all annoying.

Usually when " and @ are backwards its because the keyboard language on the computer is set to American (United States) instead of English (United Kingdom).

Dont know what OS you're using but try to find the regional and language options for your PC usually in control panel and make sure all keyboard settings are set to right country. Make sure to do this on all tabs and when clicking on all "Details" or "Advanced" buttons you see.

ummm do you mean the British pound symbol because # is the pound symbol :)

however it's your keyboard mapping that is screwed up. do a google search on how to fix it, they've continued to bury it further and further into odd and stupid menus starting with xp

Maybe someone is playing a joke on you? I used to switch my brothers "0" and "1" key around all the time, it was hilarious.

Like everyone else in this thread has said, you either have an American/English laptop and you're living in England/America or things have been swapped around to conserve space.

Also, # is a hash, not a pound.

The first of what Binerexis is right, you probably have a US/English model laptop.

But in Canada (and I assume the US), the Number symbol "#" is also called Pound as well as Hash, Number, and TicTacToe.
This - PRECISELY.

Phones most commonly use it as the "pound" sign.

I personally use it most commonly as the "number" sign.
