ok so yeah something im noticing that there are alot of messed up things happening over the last few months, women stabbing sons who wont get off xbox's, criminals being caught because of stopping to play a DS instead of fleeing the crime scene, men stabbing kids to death because of tony hawk. does this sort of thing tend to happen regularily and its just because ive only just started REALLY using the forums, or is this truly as messed up as im thinking it is.

Are you kidding? Our world? The kind of things you're mentioning are trivial and media-friendly in comparison to the bigger picture.

What about the ongoing genocides in 3rd world countries, thousands of innocent civilians (yes children too) butchered on a daily basis.
What about the fact that the life expectancy of the typical African person is less than 50. LESS THAN 50, most children don't even live to see their teen years because they die of AIDS, rape and//or murder.

If you truly want to know how fucked up the world is, read something else other than your local newspaper.

Bad news gets views, positive news stories are buried. And, unfortunately, it's posts such as yours that feed the flames.

60 years ago, half your country was being slaughted in the mud by a Dictator. A few bonkers parents doesn't really compare.

450 years ago, an epidemic was decimating the population of the world.

Messed up stuff always happens. And alot of normal and kind acts also happen. But these aren't as newsworthy or as fanciful so they don't get reported.

If you work as a cop, the world is a frigtening place. If you work as a fashion photographer, the world is beatiful. It's just your onlook, that's all.

I actually AM a photographer, and the world still sucks. Models might be beautiful on the outside but I've met a lot of them that are really ugly on the inside.

I used a poor example then.

But if you surround yourself with bad news and constantly read it, you'll feel down. Whereas if you stick to reading positive news, and other material you'll have a much sunnier outlook

on the world.

I understand your point, but shielding yourself from the bad stuff doesn't exactly stop it from happening. Would you agree that the world could be in such bad shape because of that kind of thing? Unfortunately the only "Good News" we seem to get are these pathetic, "human interest" puff pieces to distract us from what's really going on. Its nothing new.

I'm not ripping on you, I like your attitude, I just think that if more people were to face the crap that we do to each other rather than ignore it and hope it goes away, maybe collectively we can DO something about it so there won't BE any more bad news...

I'm not talking about shielding yourself from bad information. I am talking about what information you pay notice too.
Newspapers dont sell with headlines such as "all is well today" "man helps grandma across the road" Instead they have sensational and frightening headlines. It's this sort of thing which is giving people a false representation in regards to the state of world affairs.

When I worked as a journalist half of my stories were rejected by the editor when they were feel good puff pieces. Instead I was told to dig up statistics or do some story necromancy and report on the outcome of a murder which happened 4 years ago, instead of reporting about a seniors organisation getting 300k funding.

My apologies, I obviously misread your meaning. You have a lot of valid points there, and yes, happy headlines don't sell newspapers. "If it bleeds, it leads"

There is no rock bottom when it comes to human beings we will always find a way to break through and make things more fucked up.
But in all honesty from a realistic point of view, these are just some of the occassional fucked up moments that happen every so often. Nothing to assume from the events.

The world is full of terrible things. It's always been like this, but now that we are in the information age, it's a lot easier to realize that everything is not okay in the world.

This is what gets me: everyone complains about how messed up the world is (which it is), but it just ends there. There's no action beyond the initial observation.

I don't think any one of us can fix the problems of the entire world, but there's always something you can do to better your corner of the world. You probably don't even need to leave your backyard. Smug angst is what leaves the world in it's present state.

A wise man once said "Knowing is half the battle..." The other half is action, I'd say.

Things are not nearly as bad as the news implies it is. The news does not do reports of perfectly ordinary criminals or families behaving themselves. It will only do exceptional stories ("dog bites man" is boring and common, "man bites dog" is unusual and interesting). Because journalists will exclusively cover odd or negative stories, this creates a false impression that these odd things happen fairly often (after all, there always seems to be one in the news).

Unfortunately, this is when people get misinformed very easily. News present a disproportionate amount of stories about odd or negative things, so for every weird story you read, imagine that there are thousands of untold stories about unexceptional people and good behaviour.
