I picked up Resonance of Fate because it looked like a unique and interesting JRPG.

The game, while light-hearted, always had a bit of a serious undertone while playing. The game itself cracks a lot of jokes and is in general, a pretty funny game but it never really dives into silly levels of ridiculous.

That is...until the Christmas Level

Now keep in mind, the game from this point is about using guns and grenades to kill your opponents. Now, this same exact battle system is being used to...have you throw presents to little kids (skip to 2:00 in to see game-play).

What...the....fuck?

Now don't get me wrong; I find this hilarious and awesome. The game has been very good and this strangely fits in with the tone but it was quite the shock to see this level. Not to mention the funny banter during the scene (with my favorite line from the blond kid saying "Now all we need is a trampoline" to the girl who is wearing a Santa skirt :D). Those two spend the entire game bantering back and forth with feelings for each other so it's kind of cute to hear them talk like that...

Anyways, what do you think of mini games like this? Do you have other examples?

Final Fantasy VII immediately comes to mind. Every one of its mini-games are...I feel like the term "strange" doesn't do it justice. I believe the first one you come across in the game is when you have to out-perform a muscle-y dude at squats (which involves mashing buttons in a specific pattern, of course) in order to obtain a wig so Cloud can disguise himself as a woman. Do I really need to say more? Then there are the chocobo races much later on and, while that in and of itself makes a lot more sense in Final Fantasy's context, I felt like whoever had designed the background for that portion of the game had done all the meth. It deeply confused me, at any rate. It was fortunate I completed it during my first try or playing it too much might've caused me to descend into rainbow madness.

While I understand that they wanted to add a little variety to the gameplay with these, uh..."experiences"...(and they are quite amusing when you look back at it), I would've preferred they didn't exist. In fact they're a big reason preventing me from ranking Final Fantasy VII higher on my favourites list. They're just an annoying way to go about "freshening up" the game.

While I don't mind if mini-games are optional, it really annoys me when you have to do them for the story to progress. One such would be from Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, in Ven's story, where you have a rhythm mini-game to do. You wouldn't believe how many people got stuck on it because they couldn't work out the right tempo (in fact the whole of Disney Town is made of mini-games, with one per character being mandatory).

Another would be yet another rhythm mini-game, this one in GTA San Andreas, where you have to play DDR with a car. And it's a freaking story mission, too, so if you can't get past the ridiculously high requirements, you're out of luck.

And Chocobo racing was great, but way broken in FFVII. At least they fixed that for FFXIII-2.

I never played Resonance of Fate but I'm impressed that the voice acting is passable.

Even if it doesn't go against the overall tone of the game. All the songs in Atlantica(Little Mermaid land) in Kingdom Hearts II would make anyone go WTF. Swim this way? NO! Please go away you dumb song!
