It's WW2. You are the leader of a fictional island country in the Atlantic. As the war begins you realize you may have to act. Based on your countries stance how do you react?
Mine: My country would have been isolationist, so I would have publicly, letting them duke it out. Other than that I'd be supplying the Soviet Union hoping they could make a difference in future battles. Once the Axies imminenetly took over, Japan and Germany would have to fight due them bothing having a master race philosophy. While this is going on I'm secretly building an army, to mop up the victor.

If I was a island nation in the atlantic with enough power that my decision had any kind of significance I would have teamed up with hitler.

An additional blockade in the atlantic would propably have prevented the allies from invading there, and thereby greatly increased the chance of an actuall victory on the eastern front. Sure they screwed up there, but they might have been able to turn things around with more resources from the west.

Lets face it. For the most part, unless your a current/post imperialistic Island Nation, your not going to have the Man power/resources to make too much of a deference.

Problem: nobody had nukes until the U.S. at the very end (well, that and the total insanity of the concept in general).

My decision would probably be based on how capable my fictional country's military is, particularly the navy. If it was weak I'd quietly funnel money to the British and Americans (though not the Russians, Stalin was a brutal tyrant) without getting involved militarily. If it was strong I might declare war on Germany. Military involvement would consist mostly of escorting merchant convoys and being a staging point for American bombers being shuttled to air bases in Europe.

Yeah, probably this, use my island nation to help bring supplies to the U.K., and maybe authorise a small crack force of my best military spies for basically a suicide mission (If they volunteered, of course)to try and infiltrate Germany and assassinate the top command, first Goebbels, Himmler, Rommel, etc. Leaving Hitler for last.

Assuming I have a decent military force with competent leaders at my disposal, I'd bide my time until the allies had grown tired and the axis forces were all but defeated. Then I'd storm in and conquer them all, and force them to all act like Groucho Marx! *insert maniacal laughter of your choosing here*

I would probably follow the lines that the United States took in the leadup to Pearl Harbor. I would provide Britain with the means to feed itself while it defended its own shores, while building up my own military to discourage potential enemies from attacking.

On top of that, I strategically place my powerful navy to enforce a "no submarine" zone in the mid-atlantic, sinking any non-surface craft that it encountered.

I would hope that in this scenario, my nation would play enough of a role to accelerate the western liberation of Europe - hopefully meaning that the western Allies would reach Berlin before the Soviets and give them more bargaining power in eastern Europe postwar.

With a little foresight I'd also start preparing our industries for the inevitable demand of both products and services required for restoration of wartorn areas.
