In case you don't know, WWGFD stands for "What would Gordon Freeman do?". Where does this abbreviation come from? Is there a story? What are its origins?

Or is this just a fan-meme that kinda got out of hand? I mean, there is even a WWGFD sticker on the official Valve store. There gotta be some other reason for its popularity.

It's just an alteration to the typical abbreviation of WWJD or for "What Would Jesus Do" or alternatly "We Want Jam Donuts" depending on your point of view...

There are numerous other alterations to this phrase

WWGFD? This of course:

It's just a modification of WWJD with Gordon Freeman added. It makes it a reference to Half Life. Since Gordon is basically bearded, mute, gun wielding Jesus in Half Life it fits pretty well.

Crowbar. That's the answer. Crowbar everything. That's what Gordon Freeman would do.

As for where it came from, I have no idea, except the obvious (the Half Life games). The original WWGFD presumably originated as someone's own joke, but otherwise, I'm not certain...

Yeah, its just a WW__D? thing. The most common example is the aforementioned WWJD?. It isn't a meme, at least not an internet one.

That comment...paired with the username and the avatar, is quite funny :D

But yeah, What Would X Do has been a thing for quite a while now. I don't really see how Gordon Freeman is in any way different than Brian Boitano considering how the phrase is used

I love that song so much.

On topic, it's just something that caught on a bit for no particular reason.

I got so excited when I thought it would be "What Would Grim Fandango Do"...

It's just something Valve made up... cos they're Valve.

What would Gordon Freeman do
If he was here right now,
He'd make a plan
And he'd follow through,
That's what Gordon Freeman'd do.

When Gordon Freeman was in the olympics,
Skating for the gold,
He did two sow cows and a triple lutz,
While wearing a blind fold.

When Gordon Freeman was in the alps,
Fighting grizzly bears,
He used his magical gravity gun,
And saved the science fair.

When Gordon Freeman travelled through time
To the year 3010,
He fought the evil headcrab kings
and saved the human race again

So what would Gordon Freeman do
If he were here today,
I'm sure he'd crowbar an ass or two,
That's what Gordon Freeman'd do.
edit: yar, seems I was ninja'd.

There are lots. They aren't even funny anymore. I mean, I smile but that's mostly it. Although, a recent episode of South Park turned that phrase back on it's head in a really hilarious way. Can't find a way. But I'll give you a background (spoiler...if you care) - Jesus was accused of taking drugs and thus surviving the cross. Which caused everybody to turn away from him when it became known (yeah, a dig at the cyclist). He wanted to help people until some kind of disaster hit (can't recall exactly) and Stan asked him "What would Jesus do?". And Jesus just took steroids and hulked out. It was quite funny.

I prefer WWJCD.....What Would Jackie Chan Do? Probably run up a wall, kick a guy in face, then beat up his friends using a coat rack as a weapon.
