Just one word of advice... BUY THIS NOW YOU FOOLS!!!

Seriously, there is NO excuse to not get this pack, medical research shows that playing XCOM daily cures cancer.

You are a commander of a elite combat unit called XCOM, your job is to stop an alien invasion. the tactical depth this game has puts everything of today to shame. how do we kill the alien tucked away in the house? chuck a few grenades? or blow up the house entirely with your rocket tank?

everything after the first game is shovelware, UFO Defense is your god.
but it's still better to go for the whole pack, the first 3 games are really the only good ones. Interceptor and Enforcer are ok at best.

After you play the first one, you will understand why we true fans hate, hate, hate the new XCOM game.

There is a good reason IGN rated this PC game over all others, hell it's listed higher up then even Deus Ex, Half Life and Civ.

The best one is "X-COM: UFO Defense." Just read the project page and if you absolutely hate the look of it and the description then don't buy it. £2.24 for a game that people have written volumes of praise about over the years. Man alive. Take a chance.

Yeah the original is best, it is a strategy and management game with tactical (turn based) battles.
You build a base, equip troops, shoot down UFOs, send the troops to the crash site and kill the aliens/recover tech. You then research the tech and create new stuff based on the alien tech... when you get more money (from funding) you can build more bases around the globe. Occasionally, and more frequently as the game goes on aliens will attack cities, and if they find your bases they will attack them and you will have to defend. There is a plot which you uncover though research. XCOM is a global task force and you are funded by all the countries in the world, the amount of funding you get from each depends on how well each country thinks you are defending them from UFOs.

Its a fantastic game and you really get attached to your troops, you can decide what their names are (or go with defaults) their stats will improve with experiance and training and there is a ranking structure based on how many men you have. You research and create new body armour and new weapons, new devices, tanks, jet fighters and even space ships.

Of course the original is the best, no argument there. But I still don't get the hate for the sequels that much. Okay...Terror from the Deep was basically the same damn game with different graphics and an insanely harder difficulty, but X-Com Apocalypse was utter awesomesauce. It was hard if you wanted it to be, yet it introduced real-time in an awesome way that I found very enjoyable. Plus you got to beat up other human factions too if you wanted - that was always one of the best parts for me, raiding the Cult of Sirius heheh. Sure the aliens were different, but screw that - it has to evolve a bit instead of just rehashing the same old thing.

Interceptor was okay-ish, but nothing too special. Enforcer was a let-down and I still can't believe Alliance got scrapped mid-development. Ah well...selavi.

To be honest the original is probably the only one worth playing, the second is a poor clone, interceptor is laughably bad, and apocalypse is no where near as good. I don't know the other one. However the first is so fantastic it makes up for the short comings of the others in spades.
Be warned though it may take a little getting into, the controls and everything can be bewildering at first and your first few runs at the game are likely to end badly.

The original is fantastic, TFTD is pretty unoriginal but harder so it's a nice challenge. I downloaded them on steam and had to fiddle around with DOSBox to get them to perform acceptably but it's easily done and I've sunk hours into them already. I'd been desperate for someone to re-release them ever since I moved house and lost the CD copies I had of them :(

I wouldnt bother with interceptor or Apocalypse though.
