Should I buy said game series through steam? Is it enjoyable? Is it as mind crushingly hard as I have read? Is it just complex?
Comments and Criticisms all around.

It is deep and complex, deaths are final, losses are final, defeats are crushing and a lot of time is needed to understand how to go about things and not get overrun. Takes a big investment, but it's very well made and a lot of fun. If I start another game, I won't be picking a high difficulty level, that's for sure.

I wish they made a Rainbow Six type game about it, but including the planning and investing/building aspect. Maybe the FPS will turn out like that if it comes out.

They are amazing games. Deep and rewarding unlike many games of today. Taking a team in to wipe out an entire UFO gives you a feeling of great accomplishment just because of the unforgiving difficulty.

However it does take awhile to learn the right and wrong ways to play the game. You dont want to rush head long into a UFO. Instead you want to take your time and plan your attack. This may mean making a doorway with a well placed rocket or destroying equipment you would otherwise loot just to take out a group of enemies with a grenade. You often find yourself weighing the risks vs rewards and even wondering if you could have handled it better in a different way

Research of new technologies and manufacturing of weapons/equipment is imperitive as well. If you go into a mission without good gear things will probably not go well for you. If you go into a mission without gear and without a plan its almost garanteed that you'll get wiped out.

If you didnt guess already, I highly recommend all the X-Com games.

There's a good reason why the first X-COM is included in many "Top PC games" and "Best games of all time" lists. Speaking as someone who was introduced to the game a year ago, I can confidently say it's a title that's stood the test of time. I recommend it provided you don't mind taking some extra time to learn the ropes. Trust me, there is no shame in picking the easiest difficulty setting for your first playthrough.

I'm not so sure that it's "crushingly hard" so much as it doesn't hold your hand. When you start a new game it dumps you into the world interface ("geoscape") with absolutely no fanfare or tutorial. There's no time to dilly-dally, and if you don't know what you're doing you can really put yourself in a bind. Also, don't get too attached to your troops. You WILL have heavy casualties, particularly in the early stages before you're able to equip them with medkits and armor.

I'd suggest reading this guide to get you started on the right foot:

I'd also suggest watching Kikoskia's Let's Play for the game. He's not an expert at it, but the playthrough's solid. It's also pretty entertaining to boot.

You might also want to look into some fan patches and addons that fix various bugs and add new features:
