I used to use xfire. Those are all the pluses, the minuses come from what those feaures lack.
Xfire does have a good video capture, but the compression codec it uses is not very friendly to other players. (Winamp, WMA, Premeire Pro), and it's also very lossy. The chat beep noise is incredibly annoying, and many parts of the UI is just shiny things to look at that distract from the conversation, doubly so if a name contains all that silly character mess to make it "look cool" or if they have a clan tag.
My two cents on why I wouldn't use it again.

That can be disabled. It's a very good application to have with most games, but is completely incompatible with any games run from Steam (from my experience) and occasionally slows down multiplayer.

On the plus side, its an effective IM, you can find friends on any server on any game, good video recorder (albeit lossy) and good screenshot system (although FRAPS is superior).

I recommend it.

Not just Xfire (which you need) but also Skype and Steam.

Especially Steam.

I personally love using XFire when I play games. The only difficulties I encountered at first was getting the hang of the shortcuts(i.e. x+ SCROLL LOCK to chat in-game). Nowadays, my only gripe is that I can't use the chat shortcut because of my laptop's keyboard layout. I recommend it.

and what are thay?
Skype lets you do voip with other people anywhere on Earth. Its something of a free telephone service except you can also chat with text and have video calls as well.

Steam is a digital distribution service from Valve and it lets you have all your games on there, you can download them from any computer and you can play them without the CD so long as they are registered to your account. Plus sometimes they release deals that let you buy really cheap games.

Edit: Polish up on your grammar and using proper capitalization or you will be frowned upon here.

Steam is a prgramme from Valve allowing you to digitaly download games, add in game friends, stats tracking; simlar to Xbox live. If you want to play Half-life, TF2, Left 4 Dead or CS:S/CS 1.6 then you will need it, it is free and is safe to use as long as your not stupid.

Offical Valve page

Also I've never used Xfire but I find Teamspeak to be better if the game dosnt support VOIP.

Most games have a demo recording feature so when i record game fotage I record a demo in game (normally less of performance hit) and then reload the demo, slow it down slightly, record with FRAPS and then speed it up later in a video editor.

All the above are free with the exception of FRAPS which costs 37$ at time of posting. (Although it hasnt changed in years.) FRAPS' buy page

Also, I took the liberty of correcting you post, here at the escapist, it is prefered if post's are proof read and have correct grammar and spelling, even more so if you are in an english speaking country, as i noticed you're a Brit. The effort will set you apart in the world of internet and gain you respect at the escapist. (Wouldnt it be ironic if there was something wrong with this post. I bet you that there will be)

DAMN IT. You ninja'd me, but my post also has links. Feel the pain.
I love how we posted the exact same thing pretty much. Though you did take much more time to flesh it out and explain. Kudos to that!

Good recommendation on FRAPS too. Xfire's video capture capabilities only let you have .avi files which are not easily compatible with WMM.

Yeah, don't give out credit card details, account details, as valve won't help you out as it's your responsibility so your problem. Oh and DON'T hack, as VAC bans are never changed. You will need to make a new account, format your drive and buy the game(s) again if you do get banned in order to play it again.

The fact you are used to 1337 speak is kind of worrying...

Yes it is, TF2 has been updateed past medic, we have LV3 dispensers and teleports, and the pyro and heavy have been updated with the scout to follow soon (I'm awsome as scout). By all means get the PC version of orange box or just your favorite ones from orange box, thats whats great about steam, you can mix and match.
