One of Microsoft's Xbox marketing leaders Yusuf Mehdi has opened up on the advertising potential for the soon-to-be-released Xbox One console. Speaking during the recent Association of National Advertisers Masters of Marketing Conference, as reported by AdAge, Mehdi hinted at the possibility of making Xbox data available to advertisers.

"We are trying to bridge some of the world between online and offline," he said. "That's a little bit of a holy grail in terms of how you understand the consumer in that 360 degrees of their life."

"We have a pretty unique position at Microsoft because of what we do with digital, as well as more and more with television because of Xbox," he added. "It's early days, but we're starting to put that together in more of a unifying way, and hopefully at some point we can start to offer that to advertisers broadly."

Through its Kinect camera, the Xbox One will have a window into players' living rooms. This opens up a "huge new trove of data" about how people are interacting with TV ads, according to one marketer who spoke under the condition of anonymity.

"It could have a big impact on [advertising pricing]," he said, given the Xbox One's ability to determine if people are paying attention to advertisements or how their bodies respond to promotional material.

Last week, Xbox director of product planning Albert Penello said this kind of biometric data does not leave the local Xbox One console unless people allow it to and that Kinect was not designed with advertising in mind. Still, the advertising potential for Xbox One, should consumers allow this data to be shared, would be unprecedented, AdAge writes.

"If even a fraction of likely Xbox One users could be persuaded to share data, the technology could create the world's largest panel for measuring biometric responses to advertising."

Wasn't that assumed from the moment we knew the Kinect could tell your pulse and such? I remember there being a few articles about MS filling for a patent on the idea back then.

This was my biggest gripe with the Xbone, even more so than the 180. I think it's terrifying, companies having access to detailed biometric data alongside credit information and all the rest. Do many really trust them? It's bad enough having your personal address sold to spam companies, they are not regulated enough nor secure. I have no doubt there will be a leak sometime too, not to mention how this could aid criminals with identify theft and social engineering.

Disgusting really. And people will still buy the Xbox One.

Well I suppose people are used to having no privacy, what with Facebook and other social sites, while being used to getting "ads tailored for them" from Google. It's still disgusting, but I guess there is a precedent.

So, let's this as reason #2,145,723,567 not to buy the xbone. I rather not be bombarded with male enhancement pill commercials just because my console detects a "hormone imbalance." I have the feeling this feature will be, by default, to be on, and the only warning most people will get will be in the EULA.

Well, that's certainly not invasive and creepy. *shudders* Frankly web site cookies are borderline invasive as it is and about the max that I would voluntarily submit to; this is off-the-charts. Behaviour analysis? Monitoring interactions? Selling that to third parties? Bloody hell.

Last I heard tho, the Kinect was being made optional and would be sold separately (please correct me here if I'm mistaken).

Hope this isn't for real.

I don't think so, I had heard that they had made it so the Kinect doesn't need to be connected for the console to function, (despite arguing that it couldn't function without the Kinect because of space magic) but that the Kinect was needed for the 'initial setup' of the console.

So basically what that translates to is, you're still forced to pay the overhead and buy the useless brick if you want it or not.

Don't want to support Microsoft's practices; don't buy their products, simple as. Swallow your pride, and do without those shiny exclusives.

This device sounds like a better and better deal with every new article!
...I think I'll stick with my PC, though.

They're the ones holding the shovel. All they have to do is stop digging.
They're trying to find out if they can dig until the hole goes right through, methinks.

Well, English is not my first language, but I can't find any evidence in the article that MS will sell or use their data without permission.

Just don't consent to "miscellaneous" data being collected then. The things that hide behind that horrid word.

Damn, do you know if that actually pauses the game or if it's just an annoying popup?

Fuck Microsoft, fuck their Xbone cameras that you can't turn off and fuck Big Brother.

May I remind you that Microsoft was the first company to sign up to PRISM?

Of course they're going to say you need to consent first, but considering what happened recently with the NSA and all those companies, I'd say privacy isn't a big concern for them. Now, I admit I could be totally wrong, but the possibility is there.
