So, I actually slept through the Xbox One reveal myself. But when I turned on the computer a few hours after it had ended I got all this press about the console (which I expected) and a new nickname "Xbone" Where did this come from? Was it some Reddit user who just thought he was being clever? Can someone fill me in?

If I had to guess, it's because 'Xbox' and 'one' combine to make 'Xbone'.

I like to think it also has something to do with the CoD dog.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy, I get to tell Daystar he didn't use the word "portmanteau".

Really now, how can your forum ego allow that?

But yeah, basically, XBox ONE...

well, it's meant as a derogatory term.. as in "that's a boneheaded move", and to paint the people who named it as a silly bunch of dinguses..

but yes, it's technically a portmanteau of "Xbox" and "One". So honestly, I think it's a decent moniker, even silly fucking sillyheads aside.

Noone said it can't be degrading at the same time.

Honestly, the first thing you should do when coming up with names (of anything) is figuring out the worst way it could be twisted into a degrading joke.

like, the Wii shouldn't have been called the Wii.. because Wii is a homophone of Wee, or a bit of a slang term for taking the piss.

Xbone is sort of the same deal but WE had to point out to them that you can make an honest portmanteau (not to be pedantic but that means "taking two words and mashing them together") that sounds silly and stupid.. they should have seen it coming, probably did, don't care, so why should we? It's the xbone.

Sounds French.

I avoid all French words.

I don't have to word to describe a meeting at a specific time and place, or word to describe the woman I'm engaged to, but that's the price I'm willing to pay.

Yeah, it's a derogatory contraction of "Xbox One" - Xbox becomes XB, so XBOne becomes XBone and then we arrive at Xbone.

Now, we get to use the following sentences:
"Microsoft just Xboned an entire console generation."
"We got Xboned."
and so on, and so on.

after all my portmanteau talk, it occurs to me you're probably not stupid OP. you're asking specifically who came up with it. I honestly don't know if it's even possible to know.. memes are funny that way.

First I saw the term was an article on this very site. Then I started using it, because with all the talk of a dog in CoD it was too apt to pass up.

I, for one, can't wait for Collar of Duty.

Probably trying to have it do too many stupid, stupid things at once.

They should have called it the X-Boner.

Yes, Boner was once used to describe embarrassing shit.
xD Ha ha ha! Isn't it still used like that to this day?

I think Gray Carter started it with the "Xbox ain't backwards compatible" thread, which is where I first saw it.
What Tizzy said. If Gray wasn't the first to use it here, he was at least the first person I saw use it.
