OK I really feel the need to ask now, is there any REAL, TANGIBLE point to achievements? When one pops up on my screen I think "Oh, cool" or grin if it's funny, but is there any kind of prize in getting a certain number? Can you trade a certain amount for Microsoft Points? Maybe they earn you other little privileges or something.

If not, then I feel slightly insulted. I don't need coaxing along to do well in my game like I have special needs or something. I guess it doesn't really matter all that much, but I hope developers aren't pressured into coming up with loads of these achievements that don't actually mean anything when you get to it. I'd prefer a great ending or something as my reward.

Your thoughts please, all appreciated.

Achievements are just a way for gamers to compare their levels of obsessive-compulsiveness. The only real effect they have is to give a game extra replay value. I know I wouldn't have played Kung Fu Panda or Beautiful Katamari for as long as I did if there hadn't been achievements.

EDIT: Oh yeah, alot of games, like Halo 3, use achievements as a mechanic for unlocking certain items usable in the game (like the katana bodypiece).
I totally forgot about that. Also, Team Fortress 2 on the PC (and the 360, eventually) uses achievements to unlock equipment.

Can anyone else name any games where achievements have a purpose other than showing off?
