Lol, the M$ fanboy butthurt is pleasing to me.

This article is bullocks plain and simple. The Wii won this console generation by a loooong shot and the PS3 really isn't that far behind the 360 as the kind people who have already posted the numbers have shown.

Besides, when you take out all sales from all the RROD replacements I'd be willing to bet that the PS3 is in 2nd place quite firmly anyway.

Most of those sales come from people who had to replace their Xboxs after the RROD

I have had mine for years, don't plan to replace it until the next-generation consoles come out.
Well there's that and the fact that most multiplatform games tend to sell the most on Xbox so if there aren't more Xbox's there's certainly more Xbox people buying games than other consoles.
In the US and the UK, the PS3 is more popular in Asia and the rest of Europe than the 360.

But yeah anyway as everyone's said repeatedly, no. of 360s shipped worldwide =67 million, no of PS3's shipped worldwide =63+million, no. of Wii's = 90 million

There is basically no difference between 360 sales and PS3 sales
Oh no I wasn't talking about systems, I was talking about sales of multiplatform games. Usually how it goes is 1. 360 2. ps3 3. PC. It's why say getting BF3 is better for Xbox because there's always going to be more support, it makes sense for PC because the game runs better and there's more freedom, whereas on the PS3 all you pretty much seem to benefit from is one disc.

I know you were, the point is, the chances are you're from a country where the 360 has superior popularity (just because of the demographics of the Escapist and that those countries tend to be English speaking), whereas if you go to other countries.

For example, in Germany the PS3 absolutely dominates software sales, to a much higher extent than the 360 does here
http://www.amazon.de/gp/bestsellers/videogames/ref=sv_vg_0
In their top 10 there isn't a single 360 game.

What I'm saying, what you're seeing isn't a higher percentage of 360 software sales because games sell more on the 360, but that you're looking at it from the perspective of a country with high 360 popularity, the situation is completely reversed in the non-English speaking parts of the world, where the PS3 tends to be popular.

I mean Japan they often don't even bother selling the 360 version :D

*sigh*

Nintendo still owns my soul (and wallet) as long as they keep making Fire Emblem games.

With all the problems I've been having with my PS3 and a giant middle finger I've got every time I tried reaching Sony for help I'm considering extending the same courtesy and switching to Xbox. Then again it's Microsoft....Fuck, PC it is :D

OT: The numbers Mason! Look at all the pretty numbers! Anyways, I always thought Wii was the all-time best-seller.

Xbox 360 Owns Nearly Half of Console Market

Own a console? Odds are, it's an Xbox, says Microsoft Marketing Officer.
This is why gaming journalism isn't respected.

I have a lot of issues with mainstream journalism. But at least your typical mainstream news source is smart enough not to report corporate press releases as actual facts. They'd have worded the headline as "Xbox 360 Owns Nearly Half of Console Market, MS Marketing Exec Claims", or at the very least used the irritating CYA question mark at the end of the headline: "Xbox 360 Owns Nearly Half of Console Market?"

Unless MS have had some major breakthroughs with dynamic recompilation, 360 games on PC is a pipe dream for most.

However, the keyword in the original statment is 'Windows 8 devices'...

It's well known Microsoft wants to make an inroads into the mobile device OS caper and reportedly Win8 is the first edition of Windows that's RISC based version isn't a complete piece of shit. Also with the newest ARM architecture (the CPU architecture of choice for mobile devices, for them what don't know) now able to support 64bit and several flavours of System on Chip (SoC) ARM CPUs (some going as small as 28nm manufacture form), it's looking like MS might be aiming at getting Win8 onto high performance tablets as the OS of choice and using XBL as, amongst other things, it's app distro.

Or maybe MS are just shitwaffling and will eventually release the min specs necessary for emulation in the hope they've talked the feature up so much people will ruish out to go upgrade to spec instead of telling MS to go fuck themselves... it's not like they haven't grossly misjudged the PC community (not just gamers) before.

Thank you, but source please. And have you had a look at the sources cited for the article?
vgchartz.com

The article is using MS which is manipulating the numbers to make it sound better than it is. The 360 is last(excluding the wii) in the weekly world wide sales, and is only a little bit ahead of the PS3 in life time sales. That number doesn't take into account RROD replacements that were out of warranty and their have been a few. Everyone I know who bought a 360. The weekly sales are also only as good as they are because Nintendo announced their Wii U, and that signaled the end of this console generation. Anyone putting out a game for the Wii has had that in development for a while, and any AAA title had been moved over to the Wii U. This is, in part, the cause of the 20% drop in game sales due to their being fewer games to buy the last few months. So the 360 is still selling after implying that the 360 replacement wouldn't be launched any time soon. In fact looking at the number the only reason the 360 is "defying" gravity is because the kinect was launched with it and is selling similar to a separate platform in terms of sales like the Wii Fit Balance Board.

MS and others should be aware that claiming "victory" when other are winding down so they can ramp up for the next cycle is a bit deceptive. They are also probably lieing just like Nintendo did a year or so prior to the Wii U launch. So MS has probably learned to mimic the best lier of the all.

Thats impressive being that its their second console. Although im sure alot of that maybe came from the fiasco that was PS3. I had the PS1 and PS2 and Xbox, loved them both to death, but the cost of the PS3 was at launch made the 360 more viable option.
Indeed. I got a 360 simply because it was cheaper. Now that I have both, I vastly prefer the PS3 in every way, but there was no way to know that at launch, so $600 was too much to ask for me.
At the time it was also unclear that Blu Ray would win the format war. Between the original cost of the PS3 and not knowing if the Blu Ray player on it would end up as useless I also went with the cheaper 360.

Looking back on it now perhaps the PS3 would have been the better choice in the long run, but yea dropping $600 just for something to play games on was a load of cash back then.

Just going to agree with everyone else, account for Red Rings, the Wii kicked all of the ass (somehow) and the numbers are clearly off. Still, can't have every article researched thoroughly >_>

That number is pretty useless. Does it account for sales from xbox owners replacing defective units? does it account for the fact that there have been many promotions that give away xboxes? does it consider people who have more than one console? etc.

That's a good point. I'd totally forgotten the push to get windows 8 onto mobile devices or at least tablets. It seems a major point of a lot of UI changes.

I can hazard a guess as to the kind of minimum specs you'd need to get xbox games running on PC, and it certainly isn't pretty. But... It's not outside the realms of possibility.

I doubt even microsoft would be that stupid, but I'd laugh if they meant 'first generation' Xbox games will run on PC...

That'd be funny. It'd be easy to do. (People have hacked original xboxes to install standard copies of windows, which shows just how close to PC architecture those old consoles were).

But I doubt even microsoft's marketing department could get away with that one...

"...attributing that success to both the Kinect-..."

XD

I'm sorry, but I honestly had to stop reading and laughed my ass off at this point for a good thirty seconds before I could continue. Are they really serious?

Look, dude can you just change the title? Maybe even update the article a little? You made a mistake, we can all make mistakes, and at least if this article wasn't good journalism, actually updating it and admitting you were wrong is better journalism than many professional news outlets.

Because as it is this thread is still half full of people saying Odd? That sounds weird? Maybe it doesn't factor RROD?s and half full of people saying, no there are 90 million Wii's, 67 million 360s including RRODS replacements and 63 million PS3's.

Wikipedia would be good enough to source this for you
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_game_consoles

and if you follow the sources they are much much more credible than what the marketing officer of Microsoft says.

In fact this quote comes from a set of three quotes, each from each console manufacturer explaining how this months sales figures mean their console is the best thing ever. MS simply had the most BS in it.

I was okay with you letting it go, but look you are still misleading people even now. Just fix it.
