Im buying a second hand xbox 360 premium with 5 games and such for a good price but my brother says that I shouldnt buy it if its so-so old because of extremely high chance of the red ring of death. Is this true? And if so how old should I be wary of? If I dont have a warranty on it can I still get it repaired? If so for how much?

Thanks for all answers, I dont want to get screwed by this.

EDIT: Its 2 years old.

The red ring has been a problem from the very beginig with 360, my advice just don't over do it or your 360 with cry for blood. I would get a warranty on it just in case some people get "falty" items and stuff.

Age does play some part in it. The first releases of the 360 had several technical problems that weren't solved for awhile. If it was purchased new within the past couple of years it's probably okay.

I would ask to test it out first. see how it does for the first hour or so then make a decision. If you do end up buying it there are several ways of guaranteeing the life longevity of the system.

Beware second hand 360's. I'm have one now and it suddenly decided one day to stop reading discs. A simple fix I found was to place it horizontally. Then swap it back when the problem came back. If the store offers a warranty, get it.

Age wise, be wary of anything 1 1/2 years or older.

Where are you buying it from? dont forget somewhare between 600,000 and one million 360s' have been prevented from using live
And if it is older, it is more likely to rrod but i know a few people who are still on their origionals

Im buying it second hand. So not from a store. And I dont have money to buy a brand new one. I just had money to buy this one, if I buy one new I wont be able to get any games but this one luckily comes with games like halo and quake, two controllers, messenger kit, two headsets and so on

i would ask to be able to try it out for a hour or two. and also i would ask to connect it to live. might be the reason there are trying to sell it "at that good price" to you. but honestly all the problems with the 360 are easy fixes. i have had them all and have fixed each one. been useing this 360 for 3 1/2 years now. also note i leave mine on 24hrs a day. only time its off is to update and for downtime for XBL

RROD is casued by over-use. Just don't over play it then. Sigh

OT: Buy it man. You won't regret it.

it'll probably be fine, i wouldn't worry too much. if it'd for a decent price you might as well go for it.

My understanding is the newest systems are built with smaller architecture chips that create less heat, that's why I made sure find out when mine was made, not just when it was bought. Everyone here is on the right track I think, try it out and make sure it's not banned from xbox live - the guy will probably tell you "oh your account will be ok" but it won't, they ban the hardware so no one can use that unit. Most likely explanation for the great price this guy is giving you.
