Xbox 360 Saving Problems

I seem to be curséd when it comes to these bloody things...

I got a second-hand Xbox 360 today - the kind that Game takes in faulty, repairs it and sells it on for cheaper. I took it home, hooked up my old hard drive and started playing Dragon Age Awakening and Prototype.

After about half an hour of playtime, the console began to act up. Autosave functions would not autosave - it would take ages to 'read the storage device' and draw a blank. This also happened with manual saving.

Furthermore, if I turned on the 360 again and tried to reload the game, the bastard thing will complain that the save file has been damaged and cannot be accessed.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Or should I swap it out for another 360, for the second time in two days?

You should call GAME and explain to them what's going on. Refurbished is never worth the cost reduction in my opinion, but they're guaranteeing that it'll work, and if it doesn't, you deserve either a swap, or a refund entirely. I wouldn't bother trying to resolve the issue because you shouldn't have to.

How much money did you save by purchasing it refurbished anyway? If it's less than 150$ I'd honestly suggest buying a new Xbox 360 Slim. The 300$ is worth it, and you'll have a one-year warranty. Either way though, good luck.

If you're using a hard disk drive (not internal flash storage), then the hard disk is probably just failing. If that's the case, I'd make them replace it under warranty...

I repair these things for friends pretty frequently, from minor to major repairs. Last week I had to entirely gut the innards out of a 360 DVD drive and re-solder all of the connections from the laser to the PCB inside it.

I'm not sure how much I saved getting a second-hand Xbox, but as a student I need the money...
Last time I had a problem like this, it resolved itself after a little while. But you're right, this shouldn't happen to a 'new' console. I can easily swap it (again!), and plan to do so on monday if things haven't improved.

I've got another hard drive, a newer one, and will try it with that. Problem is my older one has all the save files on it such as Dragon Age, Mass Effect, etc, so I hope it's not the hard drive...

Update: Works fine with other hard drive. How would I go about taking data from my old one and putting it into my new one?

Well, the easiest way would be to get the XBOX 360 transfer cable. It should come with some pretty straightforward instructions.

Otherwise, you could open the dead HDD and just connect it to your computer through an external enclosure if you have one laying around. If not (or you've never used an external enclosure before), then just go with the HDD transfer cable.

That cable is very easy to use, as long as you follow the instructions. It's also pretty cheap, so I would advise that as your primary method.
