Do you believe in what this article has to say? (check out the pictures)
http://www.jeuxvideo.com/news/2010/00041397-microsoft-planche-t-il-sur-une-360-slim.htm

translation:

"Although one must take this information with caution and retreat necessary, the two pictures below correspond to the motherboard of an Xbox 360, thinner and more compact than the current component of the console Microsoft. They come from the Chinese site bbs.a9vg.com. This would mean that the American manufacturer is currently working on a "Slim" for his machine, just like what Sony with its Playstation different. If there is nothing to confirm this thesis, the aggressive pricing of Microsoft practiced in recent years on his 360 no longer really the firm to continue in this direction, the call price of the machine is already very low (169 ?). The arrival of a Slim on the market is in itself a good way to boost sales of the 360 without breaking the umpteenth time its price. The last time a Chinese website was broadcasting pictures of the way the information had proved correct as it were the first shots of the PS3 Slim."

As if they need to make it smaller. It already overheats in its current large casing. Maybe they should sort that out before trying to compress it to an even smaller case.

This is pretty much all I have to add to my previous statement.

Hmmm. Well, it would be a first for Microsoft if it is true. Usually they only release a new design that is specifically created to fix critical flaws. (I should say, new motherboard or other similar internal design change) Sony has a long history of releasing smaller versions of their products, so that rumor is easier to believe.

I suppose the reports that both Sony and Microsoft wish to stretch the life of the current console generation a few more years might make it worthwhile for Microsoft to redesign their unit to give it fresh life. In any case, I won't be buying one, at least not until my fourth Xbox red rings on me.

I don't include the Halo boxes as design changes necessarily, as those are cosmetic changes.

Installing games really helps the overheating problem. I swear I can run an installed game for hours and the 360 is still cool to the touch. They should have discontinued the arcades and made installing automatic. It vastly improves the performance of the machine.

Agreed about the game installation.

Plus the Jasper models are working fine.

But what did they do?

Discontinued the premium, brought out the pro edition then discontinued that.

I'm not so sure. It's not like Microsoft to bring out a smaller version. They didn't do that with the Xbox just brought out different colours.

Then again in this gaming generation, anything goes.

Yes they didn't but there is some other factors to consider. Like getting smoked by the GC and the PS2. It wouldn't have made much financial sense to invest in researching how to make a slim Xbox.

Today though they would be stupid not to. The big complaint when the 360 launched was the size. Making the 360 slim would help them break into the japanese market more than they already have. Especially if they can make it smaller and lighter than the PS3 slim. It would also help them shake off the RROD fiasco. I can see the ads now. 360 lite 99% RROD free lol. But seriously it would help them regain some faith with the average gamer who doesn't go to gaming sites and have no clue what a jasper chip is. I just don't know how they could do it. Not without new HDDs since those puppies are huge and weigh a ton. And that would piss off a few people.

They should've done this and fixed the rrod ages ago. Maybe that way I would have a 360 on my shelf rather than the big black box of wasted potential known as the ps3.

This is NOT for a 360 slim people, it's for MS to save money on manufacturing while improving the cooling issue that led to many RRoD's.

This would make a ton of sense if it were to be concurrent with the launch of Natal. I can imagine a bunch of new people picking up an elite bundle with Natal at the current premium price point ($399 with a 250GB HDD), and it would be all the more attractive if it were a new model (and doubly so at a better price point, although Microsoft has been loathe to drop the price for whatever reason).

Sorry again. This doesn't even make sense; I only should have submitted twice at most.

Incorrect. They have been constantly redesigning it to be cheaper to produce. That's why they've been able to drop the price and still make money off of it. The fact that they couldn't really do that with the original Xbox is part of why the completely abandoned it.

That may be, but the outside of the box has always remained the same design. As opposed to Sony, who has traditionally come out with a smaller version of their product. That was the point I was trying to make in regards to this article.

Mainly, that a picture of a new motherboard does not necessarily mean an Xbox slim.

Does this make it quieter? Last time I installed (Feb last year - Fallout 3) it RROD a few weeks later. Might've been the make, I think I had that glitchy 1 they released in 06/07.
It runs silently. It doesn't spin the disc so the fan runs pretty low. It should really help prevent the RROD. The RROD is caused by overheating and installing games stops it from heating up in the first place. The downside is it takes about 5 - 10 minutes to install.

'Always'? They've had one other system before this which had a short lifespan and where they had contracts in place that prevented them from doing a redesign to reduce costs.
