People don't seem to understand the idea of a console reveal. It is to reveal a new CONSOLE. Not games. Sure, it's nice to see games, but it isn't the point. That's what E3 is for. For what it's worth, I was impressed, and the announcement of 8 new IPs is always a good sign. I didn't see the PS4 reveal, so I can't compare, but this seemed like a pretty good overall presentation. Name is kinda dumb though.

Ok, so I'm going to ask this question.

When the One fails.. Is this a win for Gamers? I mean, it will crush Microsoft. There's no doubt about that.

But will the developers and designers who step out of the massive smoke cloud that used to be Microsoft look around and start saying to themselves that they need to actually listen to what Gamers want or they will be out of business?

This is to lighten up everyone's negativity how this "IS THE END OF GAMING!!!11!" or how "MICROSOFT SUCKS!!!" or "This console will crush microsoft!! It'll bankrupt them!! I Want microsoft to die!" etc.

Also because I agree with you.

This was a console reveal, not a game reveal. It is to showcase the new xbox to the public with as much definite information as possible. Nothing more. E3 will have games, about 8 new IPs to be exact.

All the best and most revered console reveals had accompanying games to match. People want to see what these things can do; and showing it do what the average smartphone can(voice command, skype, Tv etc.) as your main event is pretty pathetic. There is a reason Sony's stock just jumped.

I remember posts like this when the PS3 stumbled onto stage back in the day.

She's still recovering from that one.

Either way, very poor presentation. The whole thing felt half-baked.

Yeah...I'm probably going to pass on this one.

Also, apparently the whole "Tethering games to the system." rumor was true. Though you can also apparently pay a fee to put it on another account. Whether this deactivates it on the first one, I have no idea though.

The only part I liked was when they announced a dog would be a main character in the CoD series. But then I remembered I don't like CoD...

EDIT: Poor presentation overall too. They just kind of gushed about how awesome their new XBox One is going to be, for an hour straight. And it was pretty obvious that the people cheering and shouting were Microsoft employees, and the ones that weren't were the journalists and such.

Wait.

From Kotaku quoting something else

And what of the persistent rumors that Xbox One games will be ?always online? ? that is, that single-player games would require a constant online connection to function? As it turns out, those rumors were not unfounded, but the reality is not so draconian. Xbox One will give game developers the ability to create games that use Microsoft?s Azure cloud computing service, which means that they might be able to offload certain computing tasks to the cloud rather than process them on the Xbox One hardware itself. This would necessitate the game requiring a connection.

Are developers forced to create games that have these online features, and are thus not playable offline? They are not, Xbox exec Whitten said to Wired ? but ?I hope they do.? So the always-online future may come in incremental steps.
a.) Wasn't this Simcity Online or whatever it was called stupid bs reason for being online? that the game was so complex that it needed servers to process your options? Didn't that fail for them?

b.) and saying that you need to "offload computing tasks" makes your hardware sound lame, Microsoft...

One thing I'll say though, I think this would have gone better for MS (as I pointed out before, the Sony stock value jumped 9% after the event) if they showed more stuff people outside USA care about. NFL fantasy football? I mean...that's not that much of a selling point on the other side of the Atlanic, for example.

And if they want to go a complete multimedia experience with the new Xbox that's their prerogative of course, but it's odd to pick the gaming community as your main audience for that.

Hate the XBOX One name, sounds really stupid.

Hate the new d-pad on the controller, really, 4 directional? lame.

Console looks ugly as sin as well.

I'm favoring PS4 this generation.

So, am I right to assume that Console War II is upon us?

But, I think I'll reserve my judgement on the PS4 and Xbox One until I see some actual games. Call of Duty is just Call of Duty. I already know what to expect from that series. I guess I will need to ready myself for E3 instead but I remain a bit optimistic to the capabilities of both of these consoles. Who knows? It might turn out better than everyone thinks.

They seem to ahve failed at that, given that I still don't know how the console works as a console, rather than as an extremely fancy Blu-Ray player.

Sorry, but this wasn't a good console reveal at all. Sure, they showed the specs and the box but they didn't actually show us anything new and exciting other than "ALT+TAB AND WINDOW 7'S MULTIPLE WINDOWS FUNCTIONS!". Take a look at the reveal of the Nintendo DS back in 2004 (I think it was). They spent no time talking about anything else but the console and the games, which is what gamers actually care about. They spent WAY too much time talking about TV features, online features, TV features and TV features that it didn't feel like a console reveal at all. I really can't see how this would be a good reveal for anyone but the most ultimate of fratboys.

So...yeah. The Wii U is starting to look better than the XBox One.
Well, let's look at what the Wii U has that Xbox One doesn't:

Used games
Free online
Focus on games
No 1984 telescreen watching you play

It also isn't bigger than the original Xbox, so that's a plus.

Microsoft wins?
Just in case, this is ironic count, ok?

I thought they did announce specs? I haven't been paying full attention but I'm sure I heard a bunch of numbers and stuff.

On topic, CoD looks lame.

They did announce the specs.

...the least important specs, sure. CPU/GPU (sorry, looks like it's an APU) architecture and clock speeds are conspicuously missing. One would think they'd at least have some benchmark tests ready for a system unveiling... especially with x86 hardware. Makes me think their system is probably embarrassingly underpowered. [sub][sub]Rather like their last offering[/sub][/sub]

**edit** so I guess they actually did release specs, if not benchmarks.

+Backwards compatibility for both wii games and your downloaded wii games. I sold my wii after buying my wiiU and bought MORE WII GAMES haha. It's been giving me something to do while I wait for more relevant wiiU games to come out. What will we be able to do on the PS4 and Xbox One while we wait for more games after launch? Watch TV... Yeah, much better! It's not like I couldn't have done that after turning the damn things off.

Those aren't the specs people are referring to. They want to know what CPU, and more importantly, what GPU the Xbox is running. Having 8GBs of RAM is pointless if something else bottle-necks the system. Also saying that it has an '8 core CPU' tells you very little. What is the clock speed? Does it have Intel HT technology? Is it overclocked? Those are the specs that matter.

What they have revealed is just a collection of things that the computer-illiterate vaguely understand. RAM is probably the best example of this. Everyone knows that the larger the amount of RAM, the 'better' a computer is right? That is why when you buy a desktop off the shelf at Future Shop or wherever, the computer will have some stupid amount of RAM (like 8 or 16GBs), but still have a shitty CPU and integrated graphics. The computer isn't powerful enough to actually make use of 16GBs of RAM, but the number is used as a marketing term to impress people who don't know better.

That all being said, I didn't expect Microsoft to actually tell anyone the specs during a big press conference. It is just to show what it looks like and some of its key features.
