No, sadly no profit. For those who started the account in their pre-adult years there is an issue removing/verifying your account, getting messages about "restricted content," etc. While they'll accept my new account information if I provided it removing the old one "manually" is impossible for me.
Lame then. Guess I'm lucky I started on LIVE after 18 then.

Hang on, I wonder if that was what my Mum was talking about earlier... I wasn't really paying attention, and I heard something about Live, and PayPal, and credit cards...

I'm not saying PayPal itself is corrupt. I'm asking why it is safer for PayPal to have my info than it is for Microsoft to have my info. One giant company seems as good as another, and PayPal seems a more obvious target than MS. Does PayPal have better security?
I think that due to recent events, people now believe that PSN and LIVE aren't as secure as they once thought. Paypal though, still has a watertight reputation and seems like a convenient alternative. Security is one thing Paypal has had to refine after so many years and I think that simply because of the PSN fiasco people would like to have their options open when it comes to giving out sensitive info.

I might have just been doing something wrong but my friend cannot get his removed either, the auto-renew is one of the most annoying things they have implemented in my opinion.

Damn good thinking on Microsoft's part there! I guess they've been scrambling to cover their asses since the PSN fiasco. Glad to see they can learn from the mistakes of others, even if they can't learn from their own.

Great - now what about removing credit cards that are already on your account?
This. It keeps one card stored that is impossible to remove without jumping through a bajillion hoops to get it fixed, including hour long phone calls to someone who couldn't care less. It wouldn't be terrible if it didn't have the auto update for subscription permanently stuck to "on".

This paypal thing makes no difference to me, though, being all European and un-American like.

Bah!
I hate the 'no turning off renewal' shit they pull, but I can report that the phone call to do so lasted under ten minutes (8.40 ish). I remember this because I was pleasantly surprised at the fact that I was talking to someone who could speak English (albeit with a thick Irish accent) and didn't try to sell me anything. They just checked my details and cancelled the auto-renew so as soon as the remaining time expired I removed the card.

But still, it's clearly designed so you have to go out of your way to do so, bad choice by Microsoft. They lost my patronage (Xbox-wise) due to shit like this. I mean, If you can sign up on the console, you should be able to cancel from the same interface.

This is very very true, they still did not remove my account number even after promising that it would be done. One the flip side they did offer a year of Live for a reduced cost, sadly I lacked the money.

https://live.xbox.com/en-US/account

1. Edit Payment Options
2. Find Card
3. Hit Remove (x)
4. PROFIT!!!??
Can't remove if you have an ongoing subscription. Can't cancel them without phoning MS. Period.

The safest way to go is to not use credit information at all and just buy the point cards in stores. It prevents stolen information and Microsoft can't automatically keep billing you. $60 a year isn't much, but when they take it at a time you need it, it kind of sucks.

Starting XBL age makes no difference. There is no way to remove a credit card once it has been added except if you cancel the card, it expires, or if you want to keep using the card, call Microsoft. But Microsoft doesn't just remove your card, they blacklist it. The same blacklist the put cards on that are confirmed fraudulent. Not sure what that does to credit report. Probably nothing, but who knows?

Two thoughts:
Paypal might be even scarier to get hacked, as it's linked to your bank account. That's always my fear with Paypal.

Buying MS Points cards seems much better, even if you live far away, you can buy through Amazon.com or Gamestop online. Seems like an easier way to actually keep track of how much you're spending on MS Points because lord knows it's hard to figure out what the hell the exchange rate is!

Makes sense as an extra incentive to those wary after this PSN breach, especially. But does this mean that we can use real currency to gauge purchases instead of points? Please?

[sub]I know it'll never happen, it's the same strategy carnies use with those damn tickets...[/sub]

You go to any good gamesstore and buy Microsoft Points/memberships?
I thought the same thing. I use PSN cards and Microsoft Points cards. Never put my credit card on either of them

Number of times my credit card was hacked on XBL = 0
Number of times my credit card was hacked on PSN = 1 (card canceled before being used by hackers)
Number of times my credit card was hacked on PayPal = 3 (with fraudulant use each time)

Idon't see how that's safer.
Wasn't paypal hacked a few years ago too.
I just use a low-limit card for everything and I have a credit monitoring service.
That's probably the safest thing to do.

Just NEVER use your debit card.

Damn you Microsoft!
Keeping the possibility to use paypal from me!
Well, maybe they'll eventually implement this in Europe too...

Paypal is actually LESS secure then using a Credit card! FAIL!

US Only? a HUGE finger to Microsoft for that as well. That picture is PERFECT!
