Xbox One Controller that has never synced

My wife picked up an Xbox One for me when it released with an additional controller. I have since discarded the packaging. One of my controllers has never synced with the console, despite repeated attempts and guides. It works via a connected cable, but unfortunately the cable isn't long enough and the cable I have doesn't fit in it well. I initially suspected one of my kids of spilling water on it, but I had no real proof of this (and all of the buttons/light works fine when it is plugged in).

Has anyone had experience in returning or repairing a controller? My wife wants to throw it away, but surely there is a way I can get it repaired or exchanged?

Not sure how consumer law differs in the states however I suspect it to be fairly similar. If you have proof of purchase (receipt, bank statement, etc) and it's within the warranty period then you're owed either a replacement or repair. You don't need the packaging when you're dealing with a faulty product. However the warranty for XBox One accessories in the states is a piddling 90 days (we get a year here - the same as the console itself). If you're inside that period then you're golden, otherwise there's no harm in asking (Nintendo replaced my Wii U for free well outside of the one year warranty) but in that case there aren't any guarantees.
