Xbox One Supports Up to Eight Controllers

It's time to go make some friends!

According to the Xbox One product page, the Xbox One controller will support up to eight wireless controllers. The console will come with one controller, and each additional controller is $59.99. The updated page also states the controllers have a 30 ft. wireless range and seamless profile and controller pairing by the Kinect sensing the infrared LEDs in the controller.

The Xbox 360 supports up to four controllers while the PlayStation 3 supports up to seven. Sony has not revealed how many controllers the PlayStation 4 will be able to support. Few games use that many controllers at once - the usual ones being party and sports games.

The controller uses rechargeable AA batteries and can be charged via a micro-USB cable. In addition, a low power state feature will conserve battery life when not in use, such as when watching a movie.

Microsoft has stated before that they are trying to find a way to make the Xbox 360 controllers work with the Xbox One. The new controller will also have an expansion port for add-on devices like the Chat Headset. Batteries fit inside the controller body in a slimmer compartment than in the Xbox 360 controller, and Microsoft has changed the contours of the controller to make it fit a wider range of hand sizes. Also included in the new controller are Impulse Triggers, new vibration motors for what Microsoft calls "a whole new level of gaming realism."

The idea of rumble on triggers seems cool in theory, but in a video they put out we got to see the actual rumble motors and it didn't seem to be doing the recoil gamers are expecting; just more crappy vibrations. Microsoft, just get rid of all the stupid rumble and add actual recoil/resistance to the triggers. That's what people want.

Why 8 controllers on one console when A: Microsoft has for years been shying away from splitscreen co:eek:p and B: splitscreen 8 ways would be a clusterfuck?

It could work. Look at Bomberman on the PS3.

Also, look at the PS3, they already had this. This isn't much of a selling point, more of a 'we finally caught up' point.

Pretty much this. What good does having 8 controllers do when none of the games support that many players anyway?

1) There aren't many games that use more than 2 controllers let alone 8.
2) Splitscreen is going the way of the Dodo in lieu of MOAR ONLINE ACTION.

About the only thing I can see this being used for is if there ends up being a Rock Band 4. Not only can you play with all five "instruments" at once, but you can also finally have the harmonica and tambourine controllers we've been clammoring for for years.

Unless You can connect more screens as well, and you have games that will support such this feature is pretty much useless, as we found with PlayStation 3's 7 controller ability. Sony chose to reduce that number from the experience gained from the actually doing it with the PS3 with the PS4. I think that was a wise decision Microsoft has yet to learn.

Hopefully this gets some use in sports game and the like. Would certainly mean that there'd be no complaints about who's getting on FIFA, NHL etc. first whenever I have mates over.

Has anyone outside of Nintendo made a same room split screan cooperative game in recent years? Oh wait The WiiU kinda breaks them to with its "Only 1 person gets to play with the fancy touch screen" game mechanic. So really? "WooHoo! 8 Controllers!" Is MS's big feature for today?

On the surprisingly positive side. At least for once the daily announcement from MS seems to have done no actual harm. (See yesterday; "USB storage not working / not included at launch") So bonus for them. Does anyone else see how fluqed up it is when the best a console maker can hope for when they announce features is nobody really cares and yawns? Because that's the point MS has reached.

Ps3 already does 7. Have you ever actually tried to play that way? It is awful. You need to be able to hook up more screens if you are going to add controllers like that. LOL

Just make the damn controller work on a PC, like many of us want and is well-supported. No one wants the feature you're advertising and no one supports it.

This really is a continuation of, "here's what we're going to do, we know what you want better than you want, now give us your money and use this device how we want."

That's a nice feature, if a bit superfluous for most people.

I also like the news that they are apparently going to make the Xbox 360 controllers compatible with the Xbox One, that's a much more important and interesting news piece if true.

Well if there's one thing Microsoft can support, it's the ability to sell $420 worth of controllers.

Can't imagine how many games will actually have support for 8 players though. In fact, I'm not sure how many households can support 8 players.

Maybe to the first part they will find a way to monetize it? Separate accounts, added minimal fee for more gold accounts to play games split screen? Monetizing players was why split-screen was being phased out anyway, because if you've got friends you can play Halo with on a couch than they aren't selling multiple copies of the same game, more consoles, and more Gold subs. Your second point states the obvious except for party games. But if I wanted to do that I'd just buy some cards or board games and save hundreds of dollars.

I can see this also paying off with those plastic music toy games if those make some kind of come back. Maybe another angle in there somewhere that we haven't considered.

uhm no, now we can finally have that motherfucking megazord we've been yearning for, where each person controls a piece of it! (just like in the show, where we all are standing around looking so busy when there is one giant joystick in front of us -_- )

OT: cool, but still won't get me to buy a xbone, unless you make some awesome games that use this function in a good way. (such as allowing multiple screens to make it easier for everyone to see)

Pretty much this. What good does having 8 controllers do when none of the games support that many players anyway?
What good is having a Blu-ray drive in the Xbox One when all 360 games come on DVDs?

None of the current games supports 8 players because a maximum of 4 players was the standard, so it would be pointless for game developer to make their game support twice as many simultaneous players as controllers that could be connected simultaneously.

Now that the Xbox One can support up to 8 controllers, developers can expand their scope and make games that support up to 8 players.

This feature may not be used much in AAA games in which even 2 player splitscreen would be too taxing on system resources, but it could be great for Arcade and Indie titles which contain all their action on one screen and could easily have up to 8 separate players now that 8 controllers will be supported.

An 8 player re-release of a game like Mashed (or Wrecked: Revenge Revisited) could be great fun, as could an 8 player arena brawler like Urban Reign or Def Jam: Fight For New York. An 8 player Royal Rumble mode could be a big selling point for the Xbox One version of the next WWE wrestling game, if the developers support it.
