Pretty much this. What good does having 8 controllers do when none of the games support that many players anyway?
What good is having a Blu-ray drive in the Xbox One when all 360 games come on DVDs?

None of the current games supports 8 players because a maximum of 4 players was the standard, so it would be pointless for game developer to make their game support twice as many simultaneous players as controllers that could be connected simultaneously.

Now that the Xbox One can support up to 8 controllers, developers can expand their scope and make games that support up to 8 players.

This feature may not be used much in AAA games in which even 2 player splitscreen would be too taxing on system resources, but it could be great for Arcade and Indie titles which contain all their action on one screen and could easily have up to 8 separate players now that 8 controllers will be supported.

An 8 player re-release of a game like Mashed (or Wrecked: Revenge Revisited) could be great fun, as could an 8 player arena brawler like Urban Reign or Def Jam: Fight For New York. An 8 player Royal Rumble mode could be a big selling point for the Xbox One version of the next WWE wrestling game, if the developers support it.
Since Sony already had 7 controllers supported on PS3 some developers already made games for 7 controllers adding one more shouldn't be much of an issue. The biggest issue however was it was terrible to play on the same screen with 7 people, so they are adding more controllers, they really need to add the ability to add more TVs to the same console as well.

Awesome. No-one has done it yet? Cool, allow me.

It'll support 8 controllers eventually, but only 3 at launch. ZING!

Mine's the coat with all the peripherals in the pocket.

Waste of time. If you all having a go one after the other, fine, but then you can use one pad - or has passing the pads round friends become an issue? But anything over 2 players at once (though depending on the game)will become a mess. Split screen or quarter screen - but anything over that is stupid.

Yay. Now imagine 8 players all playing on one screen. Dear God, I get shudders just thinking about it, unless you own a huge TV.

First thing I thought of was they're $60 a pop...
Not sure why you would want 8 people playing, sometimes 4 player split screen is chaotic enough.

Heres hoping this will lead to a remake of powerstone. Easily the best multiplayer brawler ever made. Maybe some classic micromachines? This could work on the right games.

Using the Kinect, you can switch out players without trading controllers would be kinda nice for party games.

Has anyone outside of Nintendo made a same room split screan cooperative game in recent years? Oh wait The WiiU kinda breaks them to with its "Only 1 person gets to play with the fancy touch screen" game mechanic. So really? "WooHoo! 8 Controllers!" Is MS's big feature for today?
I think the recent Lego games had some kind of split screen co-op. Certainly not an 8 way split though as even if you could find 8 people who all want to play the same game, have the room for them in your gaming space and a large TV you'd still have a tiny screen to play on.

I guess it's useful for party games, but unless you are pretty hardcore in to them I don't see many people spending $420 on the seven extra controllers required. Unless they expect everyone to have their own Xbone and so have a controller already, in which case they could just play online.

According to the Xbox One product page, the Xbox One controller will support up to eight wireless controllers.
Each controller will support up to 8 other controllers?

Controllercept-BWAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMM

Really though, how would games work like that.

4 players on the screen at once is small enough, we'd need like 100in televisions to fit 8 comfortably.

This just in: Xbox One supports 8 controllers. Still doesn't support any players. Function could be added after launch.

It could work. Look at Bomberman on the PS3.

Also, look at the PS3, they already had this. This isn't much of a selling point, more of a 'we finally caught up' point.
Hell, fuck the PS3, I'm pretty sure that the PS1 could support 8 controllers.

Granted, you had to buy two of those four-player add-on thingamabobs, and about the only game that used it to my knowledge was Monopoly, but it was still there two/three generations ago, before even the original Xbox!

Exactly. Congratulations Microsoft, you've finally caught up with a two decade old console. Let's have a round of applause. The only games that actually supported it were Bomberman and Micromachines anyway, so if anyone is expecting a flood of support for this "new" feature, history is not on your side.

...and as for Microsoft trying to make the Xbox 360 controllers work with the Xbone, does anyone really believe that? How will they make you spend stupid amounts of money on new accessories if your old ones still work?

On the surprisingly positive side. At least for once the daily announcement from MS seems to have done no actual harm. (See yesterday; "USB storage not working / not included at launch") So bonus for them. Does anyone else see how fluqed up it is when the best a console maker can hope for when they announce features is nobody really cares and yawns? Because that's the point MS has reached.
Does Borderlands count?

OT: Some (relatively) good news about this thing? The hell is going on?

With the way the forum community on this website responds to every Xbox One-related article, you'd think it was bad news.

what this article forgot to mention is that at least 4 of them will need to be connected all the time and you will need at least 3 of them to control a singlepalyer game character.

Yeah, I can just see 8 grown adults on a Sectional Sofa around a table of cheese-flavored snakes, chocolate, coffee, beer, soda....A total sticky mess, uncomfortably warm from accumulated body heat, the stink of everyone's breath & body odor....screaming at eachother in a loud incoherent boom as they run a raid in an MMO...Their elbows occasionally jabbing eachother in the side......
