Xbox problems - any help?

A month ago I purchised perchised however you goddamn spell it a xbox 360 slim. All was going well and good, until a week ago the turning-on and diskdrive chimes stopped working. Damn, I thought, but since it seemed to have no effect on anything else I did nothing.
But the main problem is this: when I try to install games, it claims there is no memory storage system selected. However, there is no option to select memory storage and I have found nothing to suggest why not or a solution.
The question is, any ideas/suggestions that might help.

Also inb4 'buy ps3/pc huhuhuhuh'.

i'm not sure about the slim one but the regular one i have if it says that, i remove the HDD and put it back in (since it's on the outside) and it works fine after that.

Take it back to the shop under warranty. Only thing I can think of at the moment.
