Odd that Xbox Series X unboxing followed PS5 when Xbox had been letting people get their hands on posted earlier. But looks like it started 2 days ago:

Controllers still do not have built in batteries. That might be a good thing.

It's really ugly. It just looks like a small server. The ps5 looks somewhat of an apple product, but it at least looks like a video game console.

I have a better chance of R&R the X in the living room with it though. Maybe the missus will not notice. The PS5? That goes into the addition. No way the wife would tolerate a gaming console that would stick out as that does.

I find it interesting that for the 3rd generation in a row, they've basically done nothing to the controller. I'm not saying that the Xbox doesn't have a decent controller because it does, but it's odd that they are doing nothing to try and innovate or expand the controller's potential.

Maybe that's Microsoft's philosophy, do as little as possible.

...But also buy as much as possible.

Genuine question, how so?
I’ve read the reasoning that -

- People like the “choice” of buying batteries or not (I personally don’t see the upside of needing to buy and dispose of batteries along with the extra bulk)

- It’s quicker than recharging something (more on that below)

- Built in batteries go bad (eventually....mine still holds at least 10 hour charge with the light bar on dim setting, and I always charge it in sleep mode whenever it’s at one bar). I think it’s safe to assume most controllers willl wear out from use before that happens though.

Easily replaced batteries.
These days, you can buy new PS3 3rd party controllers that cost about what a battery replacement costs.
Maybe that will happen to PS4 too?
I just have one Xbox Controller the kids gave me that I like best of my controllers. When it's battery dies, I can easily swap it out.

Skill up says the console is freaking heavy.
Likely going on the floor!
I had no idea the smaller one is, well, as small as it is! I wonder if it will provide a better experience than the Xbox 1 X.

I think the fear of built in batteries is old school now. The tech has gotten way better and my launch PS4 controller still holds charge longer than I can feasibly sit and play. And I think people just remember the days of the older console's who's batteries weren't great and the power on the controllers weren't as efficient.

However I can see that some people just like the control for whatever reason.

I feel that by the time a controller's battery goes bad, it's not a big deal to get a replacement. Controllers go on sale all the damn time. I usually buy a back up controller when there is a major controller sale.

I finally realized what this thing reminds me off; one of those carts you shoot fireworks out of.

I looked up the Commando rocket launcher thing because that’s what I first thought of. Then that led to all of these -

Also is Microsoft going to...at least rethink what they’re going to use for box art?

That obnoxious badge thing has gotten a fair amount of criticism.

designing new box art is work, and microsoft isn't trying to actually do any work.

I prefer the look of the xsex to the PS5.

I think the PS5 looks garish, and while the Xsex looks boring, I'd rather have that. I don't want my console to be the centerpiece of my living room like functional art. I want it to just sit under my TV, not take up too much space, and look like it belongs there along with the rest of my black boxes.

Honestly, if all of the consoles were just black boxes with different logos on them, and you could just stack them on top of each other I would absolutely take that. A simple minimalist design is better than whatever the fuck they were thinking with the PS5.

Again...

The faceplates are almost certainly purely so they could do this-

They wouldn’t make something like that vital to functionality because with the way people are bound to handle them it would have voided any warranty.

Yes, because I obviously want to see the internals of the ps5 sticking out, like the housing for the fan which isn't even powder-coated. Yes, this is clearly an improvement.

Actually I just rewatched the tear down and yeah, there’s a lot of crap exposed. Odd how they’re making them such a big deal in terms of customization. Seems like encouraging people to be messing with different plates is asking for trouble. I can see it being dropped or set down a wrong way, etc. Kinda surprised that swapping them is going to be a typical thing that won’t end up voiding the warranty.

Swappable faceplates... Anyone remember these? Highschool me thought my Gears of War faceplates was f*cking sick
