I bought XCOM: Enemy Uknown in the Xbox Games 'TK sale' over the weekend, on the continued recommendation of a friend and given that it was on sale at £16.99.

What a game. I played it way too much and really felt like I'd grabbed a bargain, to the extent that today I've been looking into getting the 'standalone' expansion: Enemy Within.

In my investigations I have now found that, in actual fact, the Xbox Games version of Enemy Within (priced at £14.99 to download, less than the original) contains the entirety of XCOM: Enemy Unknown, as well as Enemy Within and all the add-on content. I hope you'll sympathise when I say that I feel cheated.

What do I do now? What can I do now? I'd like to play all the extra stuff in Enemy Within but I feel like I should only have to pay some kind of nominal fee for it. Why is Enemy Unknown even still available for download, especially at a higher price when Enemy Within contains it anyway?

Thoughts, opinions and guidance much appreciated. If you want to rip on me that's also understandable but, damnit, I shouldn't have to avoid this kind of thing! I'm a man not a machine!

You did get ripped off. All console players got ripped off when Firaxis did a 180* on Enemy Within being a DLC and claimed it was "too big to be a dlc".

I've got ~16GB of Battlefield 3 DLC on my hard drive that thinks that's adorable.

Is Enemy Within worth it? Every penny. (or whatever your equivalent is)

*edit
The "Commander Edition" is essentially the "Game of the year" edition, as it contains the base gane, both addons and the expansion. It's really shitty there were no considerations for players who already owned all of it tho.

Coming late to the game (no pun), I hadn't even considered that this will have happened to everyone who already owned Enemy Unknown from its original release. That's egocentricity for you. At least now I know your/their pain.

Pennies are indeed my equivalent and so I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet. The question now becomes:

Do I stop playing Enemy Unknown right now and get straight into Enemy Within, or do I stick it out with the former, get my money's worth, then buy Enemy Within?

Also, high-five for the Zelda profile pic.

It's worth noting that right now on Steam Enemy Within is $29.99 in the US, Enemy Unknown is still $39.99, and on the PC Enemy Within does require Enemy Unknown.

So buying Enemy Within for ~$25, even after mistakenly buying Enemy Unknown for ~$28 is still a decent deal in a relative sense.

But yes, that's the price you pay for impulse buying/not being as savvy as you could.

Hell, I don't know where you're looking since I can't be bothered updating my own Xbox just to fact check and regional differences might mess everything up anyway, but from cursory Google searches most copies of Enemy Within for the consoles are physical disks and cost $39.99.

If on console, EU has its own set of (more difficult) achievements, if thats your thing. Otherwise, the entire base game is present in EW.

Yeah, console disks are $40, I actually got mine used for a change, as there's nothing on it that requires codes, downloads, or redemptions. I had already been burned buying EU for $40 back in May then another $10 on dlc, when a couple months later they announced EW. At the time I was excited, before they spun it off as a separate game.

Enemy within is just the enemy unknown campaign with new awesome elements mixed in. So if you play enemy within you are still doing the same campaign. Worth it though. Genetically engineered soldiers and robot guys make the campaign awesome.

Well... you should have looked into that before buying it, the best really is to do a bit of research about how the series connect with eachother with DLC's and stuff, always find the order of release and see what each product actually offers.

You would have been cheated if what was inside the box wasnt XCOM Enemy Unknown, but that is what you decided to buy so that is what came inside, had you known better you would have bought the other one instead.

The Base game (Enemy Unknown) remains the same in Enemy Within. That means the plot follows the same overarching path. However there are a few new subplots added that are activated over the course of a session.

The main draw is the new resource meld, new weapons and upgrades, new locations and enemies, new customization and cybernetic upgrade tree.

There are also a bunch of re-balances to a variety of elements, as well as a suite of bug fixes.

So yes, if you are willing to get Enemy Within, stop playing Enemy Unknown. Enemy Within has all of that and more.

Whilst I agree to an extent; I do bear some responsibility; I feel the cursory amount of research before buying that I did was enough. As far as I was aware Enemy Within was an expansion to Enenmy Uknown. As I was downloading straight from Xbox Games I assumed that EW would act as DLC, adding to EU and not being a standalone game.

As I have somewhat explained already, my issue now is that I don't understand why EU even remains available for purchase when EW contains it in its entirety. It is particularly galling given that in the sale I bought it in, EU still costs more than EW, which only added to my believing it was merely DLC.

Harrumph... If EW is still on sale when I get home tonight, I'll download it.

Thanks for the advice all.
