I would probably have stroke if I played on Iron Mode. I can't let anyone die, I just can't.
So save scummer all the way here. Sadly.

I expect complaints about the wicked, cheating RNG will diminish by about 95%, despite many ardent claims from obvious save scummers that they "totally weren't save scumming" and that they seriously did miss eighteen 95% shots in a row.
I probably only witnessed the wicked, cheating RNG on about 5% of my shots, but god damn, it just went crazy when I started missing the 90%+ shots.

Save scumming? Nah, I play on IRON BALLS mode. I force my team to stay at four people and only enhance one trooper with magic skillz when the plot actually calls for it.

Nobody can beat the giant set of digital testicles I have as I play on IRON BALLS mode, in fact, they're so big that even duke nukem stands in awe of my massive, giant, IRON BALLS of iron-steel.

If my balls get any more iron or any more big, the universe will collapse at the awe inspiring might of my IRON BALLS of iron-steel. Even the dreaded RNG cannot withstand my sheer massiveness.

Have I satisfied my sense of self-worth yet?

Very much so, I actually thought it was a brand new game for the price not just a very small expansion.

OT: That probably counts as save scumming, but what I do is save at the beginning of the mission, then if it really goes tits up, I reload that save (I avoid hardcore, as the many bugs I've seen would have ruined the game for good). Otherwise, I don't rage over a missed shot (well, I do, but I don't reload). On the other hand, I really like not having any soldiers die on me, so I welcome the option to go back to save scum for everything.

I dunno, this sounds pretty sweet to me. I played the game properly, then again with a bit of save scumming when my characters would die (if they were someone I really liked). Then I had a bit of fun by playing a third time using save-scum tactics to try and get through the game without losing a single soldier just to see if I could do it. Fun is where you find it. :)

I just save a few times per mission and unless I lose more than half my squad I just roll with it. I won't even consider attempting iron man because I have ran into so many game breaking bugs that require me to load a previous save. As far as the rng goes it seems like the game only starts to really cheat you on the regular once you get on classic or higher difficulty.

I'm always happy that the option is there.

Maybe I'll have a chance on Impossible again. :p

I?m playing on ironman now and am enjoying it been though I've had some colossal fuckups and randomly spawning enemies out of thin air next to my squad a few times which pissed me off (this seems more common on classic than normal).

I tried playing on Classic Ironman difficulty after having beaten the campaign on normal and finding it a bit too easy, but that bug where groups of alien could spawn from a shadow the size of a tack nail in the middle of my squad was just too much for me. As far as I'm aware that spawning bug hasn't been fixed yet either, so it damned well better be in the new expansion.
I was reading a preview in the most recent PC Gamer, and apparently they HAVE fixed the infamous teleportation bug for the expansion.

Mind you, I've heard that song from them before, so I'll believe it when I see it.

I quit doing ironman when I got shot through 3 walls to have a soldier die and then have 2 enemy squads of mutons somehow appear in the middle of my group of soldiers causing a wipe that couldnt have been avoided. Thats when I swore I wouldnt play the game again till they patched that kind of nonsense out of it and a few days after that I went back to the old xcom and realized how much better it is

That said if that problem gets fixed then yes I would like save scumming to be gone forever. However if the game still does random nonsense like that IMO save scumming has a place no matter how much I dislike it

I don't think save scumming is a very charitable term, but I'll let that slide. For some people, myself included, sitting down to play a game is meant to be complete relaxation. I'm not completely relaxing if I have to worry about half my main team being wiped out, potentially forcing me to start from scratch. X-COM is a great game, but I haven't even completed it. I play for the story more than anything, and the worrying over losing my Sniper, for example, ended up eclipsing the fun I had with the game. Introducing an option like this is a great thing, for someone like me. If you think saving is for "scum," then don't do it.

You can freely save in the original game so why wouldn't you be able to in the expansion? And, more importantly, why would anyone in their right mind be against the option?

How much is it where you are from? It's $45 on Steam in Australia if you pre-order or $50 once released... way too much. I'd probably pay up to $30 at the most.

Here in blighty its a reasonable £20 on release, I think its 17.50 atm.

I did save scumm in XCOM but limited myself to saving at the the start of missions. If I screwed up/things didn't go my way I'd have the option to continue or sacrifice however much time I'd put into the mission and start over.

Decisions I made in the base I tended to make outright (mainly because, as a new player to XCOM, I didn't really appreciate how my bad decisions were going to bite me in the ass later!)

Eh, Iron Man all the way.

Fun Fact: with some quick use of your PC's force quit function, you can still effectively save-scum in Iron Man mode. And that's without this new expansion.

I had to quit my impossible run because the RNG was actively trying to sabotage me.
I had four soldiers take high% shots at a wounded Sectoid who was outside of cover. All of them missed. The Sectoid scampered back into cover, and took a shot at my soldier in hard cover to one-shot critical him.
Playing Fire Emblem as a kid taught me that if anyone dies the entire mission is a failure, and you have to start over from the beginning.

Hey, options for second wave is always good. Not that i've tried any yet, still trying to beat classic ironman regular XD

I have a feeling i will probably beat it this time, though its probably more to do with me discovering I can save-scum by quitting to dashboard quickly...

I'll play it the honourable way once i've done it.

According to TB the game is supposed to be a LOT easier with the rebalancing and introduction of mechs. You can basically have mechs wade into enemies. They are REALLY powerful units, At least for the exalt, who are even more squishy than your own soldiers. I suspect it'll be different going up against the aliens.

People might say the RNG cheats, but I haven't really experienced it that way.
I think that a lot of the people complaining about the RNG are doing so because they're used to PRNGs (that's pseudo-random number generator for the home viewers). That means they're expecting the RNG to have a bell curve distribution (usually based on dice rolling distro curves) and result checking to break up patterns, chunks and repeats, which are features of PRNGs.

Yes, how dare people reload a game if that's how they enjoy the game.

No, I say! There must only be one and one only way of enjoying any game and anyone who dares to reload is clearly the scum of the earth.

Gimme a break.

Who the hell are you or I do decide how people want to play a game?
