Perhaps there are more of those out there who are very reluctant to upgrade from XP (Best. Windows. Evar.), but now games seem to running out of our reach.
XCOM won't be compatible with Win XP, and we will most likely see more of this in the future.

This irritates me.

Now this might be my dirty-console thinking (since I don't really play PC gaming) but that seems to make sense.

Vista came out in 2007: Five years ago for those of you who are bad at math. Hell, throw out the XP issue and could a five year old computer even run XCOM? I know you can upgrade the components to your system but at some point you've gotta let it go.

I don't expect developers to continue supporting the PS2; why would you expect PC Developers to continue supporting a system that is so old. I can't imagine that many PC Gamers still use XP.

EDIT: Whoopsed on the release date (see post right below; thanks for the heads-up Pfheonix). I read Wiki too quickly :(

I still stand by the point. XP is still five years out of date; not quite as impressive as seven but five years is about a computers life expenctancy

Vista came out in 2007, not 2005... FIVE YEARS.

XP was released in October 2001.

What do you want them to do?

If it were me publishing I'd say "sure, you can have an XP version of the game, however, your copy will cost 3x the normal amount, because of the time we had to take supporting your 11 year old OS".

Is this even news-worth anymore? Publishers and developers have been dropping xp support for years now, that I would almost be more surprised if a new AAA game supported XP than if it didn't.

Seriously, if you're still using XP and you want to be able to play new games, then I think you're more than due for an upgrade.

Seriously!? My god get with the times man. What next, something going to moan that they can't play the new X-com on a ZX Spectrum? I know that's a bit of a overstatement, but you get my point.

Gaming on a PC nowadays using windows XP is like still using VHS'es in computer terms. Nostalgic yes, but in no way practical at all. Like trying to run Crysis using a Pentium 4, with 512 MB of Ram or something.

My Advice: Embrace Windows 7, it's just as good if not better than XP, especially since it has been fully patched up now, and the compatibilty has been pretty much sorted.

That's fair enough. As much as I like XP, I only ever use it on my netbook, which realistically can't run any post-2004 games anyway. XP had had its day, and 7 has, so far, been a worthy successor.

Windows XP has served us for over 11 years.

I think its now time to lay him to rest and accept his successor (who is actually half decent) Windows 7.

I can understand how that would be frustrating, but as others have pointed out it's bound to happen. XP is simply out of date, that's what it comes down to. As much as you may like XP, you simply can't expect people to be making games for it - if anyone does, it's out of the ordinary, not the norm.

As a side-note: Windows 7 is great. After getting it, the only thing I miss from XP is the start-up sound. If you want XP, but also want the newer games, you're just gonna have to get 2 computers (or have both Windows' installed on the 1 computer, either way).

Who...cares?

Seriously, just get Windows 7
Or just not get XCOM, smart move on limiting the market for a game that has limited appeal already. I do agree that no one cares, now if it was a game that people cared about then people would actually complain.

I remember when Vista came, I had that on my laptop and I had XP on my desktop. I hated Vista with a fiery passion and never wanted to upgrade on my desktop. Now I only use that desktop when I'm home for Christmas or summer while I have a desktop with Windows 7 that I usually use. I can't believe I ever liked Windows XP.

Windows 7 is clearly a step up, Windows XP 64-bit version was buggy unlike Windows 7. I see no reason to use Windows XP as it is now. Windows 7 is just better while Windows XP is outdated by far. It's too old to support the newest hardware completely why should developers go out of their way to make software fit it? I don't demand that they make GameCube games jut because I loved my GameCube...

Speaking as someone who was worried about upgrading from XP to 7. Just do it. 7 at this point is basically superior to XP in every way.

XP was a GREAT system for it's time, but here are simple facts:
1) It's less secure than Win 7.
2) It has less multi-tasking support compared to Win 7.
3) No DirectX 10+ support.
4) 32 bit applications aren't supported on the 64 bit edition of Windows XP, so you can only run 64 bit applications on it. If you stick with the 32 bit edition of Win XP, you are limited to 4 gigs of RAM.
5) Modern hardware devices often have limited driver support for Windows XP (especially true for laptops).
6) No TRIM support for SSD's, which limits their lifespan when used on XP.
7) Still more unstable than newer versions of Windows. Even Vista, despite it's shortcomings, was way more stable than XP was. XP has far more blue-screens on most PC's compared to Win 7.

There is one area where XP beats newer versions of Windows, and that's backwardscompatibility with some older games (or softwares). It's great to have an old XP machine around for that, but beyond that, XP is aging. Fast.

Anyone who believes that XP is the best Windows ever needs a reality check. Period.
