Sorry but you are comparing apples and donkeys here, XP is actually still the OS that runs faster and with less resources wasted, not to mention the immense backwards compatibility.Jazoni89 said:Gaming on a PC nowadays using windows XP is like still using VHS'es in computer terms. Nostalgic yes, but in no way practical at all. Like trying to run Crysis using a Pentium 4, with 512 MB of Ram or something.
A game that hits the top selling spot for two weeks straight on Steam (during pre-order) can hardly been seen as having "limited appeal". Just saying.NiPah said:Or just not get XCOM, smart move on limiting the market for a game that has limited appeal already. I do agree that no one cares, now if it was a game that people cared about then people would actually complain.Saviordd1 said:Who...cares?
Seriously, just get Windows 7
The game is awesome and I do care about it (I've played it at the EB expo over the weekend, also got to see the Wii U, Tomb Raider etc etc), however I left XP many years ago and honestly can't bring myself to use it other than when I must.NiPah said:Or just not get XCOM, smart move on limiting the market for a game that has limited appeal already. As stated above. Frankly I don't get why you wont upgrade, Win 7 has been far more reliable, stable and runs smoother than XP ever did. I've only had a blue screen of death once and it was due to faulty ram, which I replaced. XP however would die at the drop of a hat, granted it was better than previous Windows, but just like XP did to Windows before it, Win7 has replaced it and proven to be the superior OS in EVERY regard. Oh and before you mention system resources, Win 7 uses not much if any more than XP, and as stated above runs smoother. Also if your really that concerned get Win 8 as its even less resource hungry. Also if you seriously have issues running Win7 or 8 then frankly, your system has no chance with the newer games anyway.Arcane Azmadi said:I'll upgrade from XP to something else when you can offer me something else worth using, thank you very much!
Well I WAS sitting on the fence about getting the new XCOM, but I guess this puts the tin lid on it.
Strange, I've had better compatability with Win 7 than I had with XP, games that wouldn't run on XP now run on 7 flawlessly. Guess its the luck of the draw.Athinira said:Unfortunately not. There are a lot of games that either don't run (or runs suboptimally/with glitches) in Windows Vista and 7, even with compatibility mode, and where it's difficult - or sometimes impossible - to locate an alternative fix on the internet. Compatibility mode isn't a universal solution unfortunately.ResonanceSD said:Athinira said:XP was a GREAT system for it's time, but here are simple facts:
1)
There is one area where XP beats newer versions of Windows, and that's backwardscompatibility with some older games (or softwares).
And if you run compatibility mode with Win7, even that disappears.

Buy an OEM version of Win 7 from an online retailer. Win 7 Home Premium OEM is about $99 which is still overpriced but less insane. It will install fine on an old PC. I don't know which country you live in, but in many MS has a student discount policy, where school and college/univerity students can buy Win 7 for around half that price. You will have to buy it online directly from MS or an official educational reseller, though. Sometimes you can get further discounts through your school, college or student union.Jandau said:Now, I understand that people might find it absurd that someone is complaining about such an old system not being supported, but please don't be douchebags to those of us who might not be thrilled at the idea of dropping down roughly $200 to get more or less the same functionality we have on the XP.
Yes. I can wait for it to be on sale and maybe share the cost with a few friends. I'll probably end up paying $20-30, depending on how good a sale I can find and how many people pitch in. Buying W7 Professional would wipe out my gaming funds for 5-6 months. I was looking forward to XCOM and I'd love to play it, but I'm not up for paying several hundred dollars for it.Draech said:Yet still be able to afford Xcom.....Jandau said:To the people who ask "Why don't you upgrade" with the same condescension of suggesting people might want to start wiping their arses with toilet paper instead of dry leaves, the cheapest I can get the most basic W7 Home edition in my country is around $180, with the Professional and Ultimate editions going above $200 and as high as $400-500. Now, to you this might seem like a small amount. To me it isn't. I'm using a 5-year old PC and my gaming budget is VERY tight. I buy all my games discounted, I trade with my friends, we share Steam accounts, and even then it's not much fun. For the amount of money that some of the more advanced versions of Windows cost I could almost build a solid PC...

So, maybe he's been saving since they announced it?Draech said:Yet still be able to afford Xcom.....
My 7 year old computer ran Crysis, so I'm going to go with yes. Easily.tippy2k2 said:Hell, throw out the XP issue and could a five year old computer even run XCOM?
