XCOM: Not compatible with Win XP.

That wasn't the point I was trying to make. What I meant was the Xbox is a single non upgradable unit designed to stay as is for the entirety of it's life.

A PC is obviously upgradeable which is one of the best (although expensive) things about PC gaming, and the OS is no different from the CPU, GPU, RAM or any other part of the machine in that it needs upgrading every one and a while.

I don't see anyone moaning about paying £1000 on hardware but for the software which drives the whole system £100 is too much. As a nerd first and gamer second I appreciate what goes into making my PC what it is, which is among other thing a damn good gaming system.

some good points have been made regarding the oldness of XP and i'm sure to some readers here 11years seems like an aeon, and in relativistic computing terms it is quite an age. so XP is old. I use it because it is stable, i very rarely get crashes and when i do they're ussually associated with either some new software that is dodgey or the ridiculously long periods of time that i run my machine.

secondly, operating systems cost a lot of money and new ones aren't necissarily very good, though win 7 has been patched up and is relatively stable and good now. but it's still another expense for something 'new' which isn't essential.

i know how to use xp and how to repair/install it. i'm not a computer wiz so i like being able to navigate and monitor/fix the OS i'm using. i would be able to figure out win 7 in time but that time would be frustrating.

i play some old games because i like them and they're good. you may not like them because they're not all flashy graphics and such but then i don't give a shit about what you like to play because that's your choice and this is mine.

and lastly, having inquired into what is required to make the game work on an xp OS there is NOT a massive amount of programming work required...it's a few dll edits and such.

now i will eventually upgrade to win 7 but i'm not jumping at the bit to do so. so yes this is still news and to some of us, perhaps older, gamers with lives away from the computer a company doing this is just being sucky.

post script: microsoft, with it's infernal updates to everything under the sun costing hundreds of dollars is annoying. especially with backwards compatibility. but then they want everyone to mindlessly upgrade completely good and working applications/systems so they can make the oodles of dosh they want. i mean really how much better is office 2007 compared to office 2000? if your just writing essays and doing simple power points there aint no difference except 300 plus dollars and a 'F you. your on an older system so you can't read my simple word document'. -end rant-

I'm just not getting why X-Com of all things is one of the games to make this push. Lets be honest here a good amount of the appeal of this game is for people who are not enjoying the adjustments made to the current gaming scene.

So it goes to follow that they're also probably not the same one keeping their machines up to max fps crytech game levels and may in fact be keeping an older OS to make sure their other old games still run right. Add in how not graphically taxing the new X-Com is and the fact that it can run on an xbox 360 or even an XP machine with minor dll modification and it just makes them look lazy for not doing what some guy on the steam forums figured out on his own.

This is the first game I've felt any desire to play that wouldn't work on XP and while it won't be last it's still irritating.

TLDR

X-Com is designed to appeal to grognards to a certain degree and they're less likely by nature to have up to date gear. So what be up with that?

The complaints of XP being 11 years old never ring true for me since Vista was total crap and 7 is so new. XP has only been redundant for a few years.

Anyway regarding the expense you can save a fair bit by going for Windows 8. Windows 8 gets a lot of flack but in the overwhelming number of cases it is the same as Windows 7. It makes no sense as an upgrade over 7, but compared to xp it's one option to save some money,

Aaand Windows 8 is now out, which is essentially an upgrade of 7 with some added features, Technology moves on. You should either move on with it, or enjoy what you currently have.

there is no way i'm going for win8 until it is well established. not after the fiasco of vista.

i don't do alot of gaming anyway so don't need my machine to be state of the art. find it bizzare that this is the first game i've encountered that doesn't work on xp...it's not as if the system requirements are beyond my computer aside from the OS. so for the twats writting "OMG you mean i won't be able to play this on my vic 20..." there is a difference between obsolete machine and the OS. my machine can run the game my OS can't because they made it so.

I can understand where you're coming from, though I ended up making the opposite choice and went straight from XP to 8 (Technically I had an alternate Vista install for Just Cause 2 and the like). The thing about Windows 8 is that it isn't a new operating system, it's just a reskin of 7 with a few performance tweaks which in turn was a patch for Vista. I'm not anticipating the new operating system blues because 8 is not a new operating system.

Considering Microsoft themselves have dropped support for XP I'd say it's time to put it to bed.
