xx(Insert Name Here)xx

I have seen people with "xx(Insert Name Here)xx" usernames all over the internet, but I've never understood the significance of it. I've tried google, several "answer" sites, and an escapist forum search (just incase this has been done before), but came up with no explanations, definitions, or even hints at the reason behind the xx's before and after certain user names. So, I ask you, my fellow escapists, why do people put "xx" before and after their usernames?

Sometimes, it is because the original name is taken. However, some people think it is cool to add x into their names, I don't know why, but they just do.

If someone has already taken the name itself, putting xx before and after is a great way to change it, since people usually ignore the xx when they see it.

I spose it's the same as people on msn who have [emote][name][emote] as their display names. It draws the eye and differentiates you from others who might have similar names.

My girl mate does it; it annoys me no end. She means it as kisses though.

The naruto ones annoy me to hell, but I'm cool with anyone else putting xs before/after their names. But the combination of Xs and numbers and accents is rather stupid IMO.

Xbox Magazine did a report on "what's behind a gamertag" or something to that effect. They placed the "xx(name)xx" gamertags under the same category as leetspeak gamertags. Apparently, "xx(name)xx" alludes to some level of elitism, especially if your tag is something like xXxXT3HR34LM4NK1LL3RXxXx. But hey, that's Xbox Magazine.

Personally, I can't stand leetspeak, so I read tags like that verbatim. ex EX! ex EX! Tee Three Aitch Ar Thirty-four Em Four En Kay One El El Three Ar Ex! ex EX! ex.

Do it to a leetspeaker when you're insulting them It drives them batshit crazy on the same level as eating an Angus steakburger in front of a crowd of PETA folks.

Sometimes people do it because the name had been taken, so they'd need to do something to change it. Other times people might do it because they think it looks cool. There are a number of different reasons.

So adding a multitiude of numbers to a name is all well and good, but suddenly it's a party foul when the X's join the club?
