It's usually because a person's handle is already in use, but they still want to use it, like a lot of people with numbers after their name. Occasionally it's combined with other stuff for decorative purposes.

When my original name was taken in too many places, I combined it with an old name and created my current handle.

A. Extra letters, or numbers for that matter, don't make your name original or good. You just look like an idiot, and out of spite I'll always pronounce your name with "x"s and numbers if I ever meet you.
B. If your name is that unoriginal that it's already picked, just bloody accept it and go with something else. Seriously.
C. What else is there to say? If there's already "bobby" wherever you want to post "your thoughts and ideas" it will not do you or your appearance any good to be "xxbobbyxx1234". I can't imagine why would anyone bloody maim their language and their chosen avatar name so badly.
Hardcore bands began doing it in the late 90s to denote straight edge status. Then kids who liked those bands would do the same on their ICQ/AIM names (Yes, ICQ). Those people would have other friends usually who weren't into hardcore but would pick up the xnamex thing and it eventually spread so wildly I can't sit in a goddamn COD4 lobby without seeing at least three or four screen names with x's around the names. I get a kick out of it though. I always say, "Hey xnamex, are you straight edge?" and then laugh at them as they try to figure out what I'm asking them.

So that's why they maim their name.

Some people think that the "666" in my name is used as a satanic statement. No, I am actually christian. What it means, is that I am someone to fear, to think of as demonic. Basically I use the "666" along with Slain and Pwn, to wave my E-Dick around.

i once read in this forum about a guy that said in a post (not the topic, but still it was relative to what he was saying) that a group of guys that dont do drugs, smoke, drink alcohol or anything like that (i think they are called EXTREMISTS or something) adds "XXX[name]XXX" to differenciate from others...
some kind of a religious group, or at least thats what i understood in his post.

so yeah... thats what i heard
Straight edge. It's this punk movement built around rebelling against drug culture.

I have X's on my AIM screename, because I tried to be straight edge when I was going through that angsty rebel phase. That didn't last too long. I never bothered to change my screename, though.

I don't know how you did this but you deserve a cookie for your efforts.

@Op I always didn't care. why do you want to know, trying to find a new way to judge people?

Usually because just the name is taken. I'm still amazed that I got Ace of Spades before someone else did.

If people want to put x's on thier name that's thier business.

Why does it wind people up so much? Live and let live, people.

I personally don't like numbers or x's. If someone has already taken your name, choose a new name. It obviously wasn't THAT original because someone else had already thought of it. What happens if xxhazyshadowxx runs into hazyshadow on Xbox Live? (Just using you as an example)

Of course, I am a hypocrite because my Xbox Live Gamertag is Phage325 but I didn't even check to see if Phage was already taken, I just wanted to have 325 because that is kind of significant to me.
