Yahtzee's naming conventions

Disgaea 4 has a random name feature that creates some weird ones. Senator ShitEater, Death Satan, Anti-Boob, U Mad, AAAAA, 8 X 11 Printer Paper, Uppercuticus, whaaaaaaambulance, Poe-Tay-Toh, Up To 4 Uses Daily, Nicholas Gage, Codblops, Tsundere, ThisNameSucks, and every character from every popular anime in the last 10 years are all possible names generated for your dudes, and the enemy dudes.

Uppercuticus may be the best random name ever generated.

I used to do this a lot with A Link to the Past. I named Link "Zelda" at first to see if that did anything like in the original. What I got was "Zelda, you're safe! Did Zelda help you?"

I'm not terribly creative when it comes to such things. I usually just name characters after myself. One time I named my character "zzzzzzzzzzzzz," which made NPCs sound like they were suffering from narcolepsy.

Personally, I think Spoony's renaming of Rinoa and her dog Angelo in Final Fantasy VIII is the most hilarious example I've heard of. He names them "A Whore" and "Anal" respectively. The reasoning for this is explained in the following quote (spoiler'd for potentially disturbing mental imagery):

"As you can see, A Whore's Limit Break uses Anal, and you can learn many tricks with Anal. There are a lot, but you start with Anal Rush, Anal Recover and Anal Cannon. The dog gets more powers from the Pet Pals magazine, including Anal Search, Anal Strike and Anal Reverse (eww!). Now as A Whore walks around, she gets more Anal tricks, and I think we all know that's true."

Yes it's juvenile, but I laughed long and hard nonetheless.

OT: I rarely name my characters stupid things. I go with the names of traditional demons. Vassago, Asmodeus, Lilith, Io. I know, kinda cliche but it's fun. Of course, occasionally I go with stupid names. Obviously, my rival in Pokemon never escapes without a stupid name. I think the most sensible name I gave him was Jesus.

In My most recent playthrough of Pokémon Crystal, I named my character "a slut". This led to a hilarious moment where Professer Elm's (is it Elm?) assistant said "A slut! This is terrible." Unfortunately for me, the novelty and amusement wears of quite fast, unless something really funny.
The Unskippable Let's Play had a pretty good naming choice when they played Legia 2[footnote]I don't know if that's the correct spelling of the game name.[/footnote]. Speaking of the Let's Play, I'm off to waste some bandwidth. Goodbye.

I tend to just go with standard awesomeness. For instance, my Shepard in Mass Effect is called Awesome A. Shepard. The A stands for awesome, because Awesome is his middle name.

In pokemon I always call my nemesis Prick. Good fun.

did roughly the same thing with my commander shepherd; except I called him John F. Shepherd (F for 'fucking')

there aren't that many games i know where i can give them a joke name (apart from zelda, when i usually name him 'Fuck you' due to my constant failures)

I don't. Sad as it may be I stick to the conventions in games where I can change the characters name. e.g. Link in Legend of Zelda and my own name in Pokemon

Whenever Yahtzee has reviewed a game where you get to name your character he has always put in some sort of hilarious combinations of adjectives and verbs. Sadly this is only really do able with some of the older games or the rpgs released on handhelds.

He does? Didn't he call one "Twattycakes", and another "Jiggle physics"?

Starting up Lost Kingdoms for the Gamecube I named my savefile "Dave" without realising this would be the name for the Main character who is a Princess.

I was reffered to as "Princess Dave" for the entirity of the game.

Probably the most ridiculous was one of my Fallout 3 characters, who I named Archchancellor Ridcully P. Diddy. Also, I named my rival ??? in Pokemon Silver because I couldn't be bothered to think of an actual name for him and wanted to keep him all mysterious.

Named my character Prisoner in Skyrim. About as fun as it gets for me...
I tend to stick to the actual name, and if there isnt one I'll make a serious one.

Madden was a great game to mess with names, my entire offensive line was named Humpy, Bumpy, Lumpy, Rumpy & Ben Dover......
Jade Empire was another good one with all its descripive names like Ungrateful Prick, Luminous Nutsack & Damn Itscold....

I tend to stick to the default names in RPGs and such, with the exception of Red XIII (who I name Nanaki, because Nanaki is Nanaki) and Garnet (who I typically name after one of Zidane's weapons instead of just Dagger, because it mixes things up a bit).

I did that, many many years back, for the girl in "Battle of Olympus." It was one of those "Forever Alone" moments.

Since getting caught up in the Brony phenomenon I've been using MLP names where I can. My Dark Souls character is a purple-haired mage named TwilightSparkl.

In MW3 multiplayer, Applejack is the heavy weapons class, Rarity is the sniper, Fluttershy is the silenced stealth class, Rainbow Dash is the fast-running dual-wielding showoff class, and Twilight Sparkle is a standard soldier.

Its funny that ingame you have people who thought really hard about their name and then you see "The Luna Ranger was killed by Rainbow Dash". Its a pretty big blow to morale.

I wonder if Yahtzee himself actually names his characters like this or just for the review titles.

I named mine jaardvick because it sounded psudo norwegion to me and felt like it fit the game theme. I often name characters JDub because that was my nickname in college.
