Search for Charlie Brooker's Newswipe separately.

The actual Charlie Brooker is quite funny, and repeatedly stabs modern news coverage in the face.

Here's the episode I'm watching at the moment. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QN_hd9LeSs&feature=PlayList&p=6DD223447015D017&index=3&playnext=4&playnext_from=PL]

This, really, they're both a bit cynical, but other than that they're not similar at all.

Wasn't sure where I should put this, so I just shoved it here.

Everyone always seems to be talking about how clever Yahzee is, and how amazingly original he is with his review style, but it seems to me he's just Charlie Brooker with a hat. Now, while I've never seen Brooker's game reviews, I can only assumed he uses the same sort of technique as he does in his reviews of television shows in the hilarious Screen Wipe. Sarcastic commentary, usually picking up on the bad points and making obscure comparisons with outlandish images. Sound familiar to you?

For those of you unfamiliar with Charlie Brooker: http://www.youtube.com/user/xthemusic
They do have similarities, but enough differences that Yahtzee is not a rip off.

The vast majority of people are unoriginal to some extent, its no big deal as long as they bring something inventive to it. Yahtzee brings a different visual style and delivery method amongst other things.

Don't get wound up about this, chances are that there is someone somewhere raging about how Brooker is just a rip off of something else, its a largely pointless endeavour. And its pretty futile to rage at people for their ignorance of something, best just to recommend it to them.

If a tree falls in the forest and there's nobody around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Actually, Charlie Brooker used to write for PC Zone back in the 90s and still considers himself a gamer to this day.

I don't see what the debate is, really. Yahtzee acknowledges Brooker as a major influence, so any perceived similarities are probably deliberate. Either way, they're both great at what they do.

Yeah, because both of them invented scathing sarcasm and it has never been used before...in fact I've lived in Britain in my life and I've never seen a single person rant EVER.
Before Brooker, if we got angry about something we would just make incoherent grunts and bang big sticks against rocks in frustration. Then we'd try to appease the sun god with offerings of smashed TVs and burning TV guides we'd use to light effigies of Myleene Klass...

On a serious note, love 'em both. Xthemusic (the host of the OP's youtube link) has also done some pretty good let's plays too.

I'm also British, what's your point?
What? Can't I reference someones nationality without there being a point? Since when did "Just saying" stop meaning "JUST SAYING"? I too am British.
Um, then why mention it at all?

Oh, but wait, THERE'S MORE:

Croshaw cites the work of British television critic and PC Zone journalist Charlie Brooker as the "main inspiration" for his own reviewing style, as well as the writing tone of Douglas Adams.

From the Wikipedia Page. So just forget about it, you aren't original, and unless you ARE Charlie Brooker, get over it. If you are, GROW UP!
All I'm saying is that people should stop saying Yahtzee's so original, when he's 'inspired' by someone else.
The world would be pretty empty if you weren't allowed to be inspired.

Come on guys, obvious troll is obvious.

I think he's mentioned his xbox a couple of times in the articles he writes for the guardian g2. I like his sense of humour and he is one of the reasons I started reading the paper.

I know nothing of this guy, I had a look through some of the other videos and he appeared in them as well so I just assumed that it was him. Sorry.

Yup. Also, he was interviewed by the Inside Xbox guys at the Video Game BAFTAs, here, about 1:42 for anyone that didn't see it when it was on t'Dashboard [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7uvrOfxKQU].

But aye, the bloke's a genius. I'm too lazy to go out and buy a newspaper (even though we get The Guardian half price in our shop on campus), but I keep up with his column on the website, s'all good.

Regardless of who came first, I think they're both entertaining. I mean, The Simpsons came before Family Guy but despite their glowing similarities, I enjoy both programs for different reasons.

Who is Yahzee?

I know of a bloke who calls himself Yahtzee because his real name is too normal for the internet. He's grumpy and dislikes 99% of everything. Yet somehow he has numerous fanatical devotees, who I like to call Croshawites.
Out of interest, do you actually not like him because he doesn't like stuff? Because that's a little weird.

Anyway I think Yahtzee is pretty fuckin' awesome. A lot of his reviews make good points about games, I've lost count of the amount of times he's said something and I've been like, yeah that really bugged me as well.

Anyway I don't really care where he gets his influence from and I've never heard him be called original anyway so this thread is pretty pointless.

Is Tom Clancy any less original for being inspired by someone else, is Ayn Rand any less original for being inspired by someone else, or how about any of the other great authors. They all had inspirations that came from other people. Humanity has been around to long for SOMEONE not to have already had an idea already. Where do you think technology comes from? Someone has an idea, can't make it work, and someone else makes it work, or if it worked originally, work better. That is the way life works...
I think it was Tom Waits that said we're all just bad impersonations of our idols. Wise man.

Hmmm... we need to figure out who this 'Yahzee' is and try and stop his annoying reviews... from the sounds of it this guy reminds me of this other guy who is called Yahtzee and does reviews... coincidence

I seem to remember he did do a gaming segment a few years back.

[EDIT: Found it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cB70wuweyQI ]

I was a Brooker fan long before I heard of ZP, so I naturally found the latter to be highly reminicent of the former. Controversially, I might proffer that the main difference between the two, besides media of choice, is that Brooker has maintained an incredibly high quality of cynical bastardism whereas Yahzee seems to have waned a bit of late. I reckon Brooker is perhaps a genuinely bitter guy whereas Cross assumes it solely for the purposes of humour.

If anyone has any doubts to the downright genius of Brooker, track down his Screenwipe review of Big Brother (S2E2P2 for the purposes of YouTube), and the series, 'Nathan Barley'(free on 4OD). Oh, and any of his newspaper articles! Okay, I've become something of a gibbering fanboy... I'll get my coat..!

never heard of this brooker guy, but what I do know is that Yahtzee makes me laugh on a weekly basis. And by my low standards of what makes something a comedy, zero punctuation fits the bill quite nicely.

So you think. The only reason shitty game developers are in business is mainly cause there's no one else. I mean, what constitues a shitty game for me is no gameplay. He can raz on crashes, graphics, and what else, I just listen for what the gameplay is like, then do research on my own. I mean, ur saying I buy all those kid games cause my sister says "it's good". From what I see, you've just become a critic yourself. Congrats!
