I sliced my finger pretty good last night , my pocket knife closed on my finger while I was working while distracted (always pay attention, use a lock blade. I cut to the bone (3-4mm deep, 15mm long) on my left pointer finger. The doc stitched me up, and I am no longer really bleeding, just if I bend to fast.
The problem is that I have no sensation on the skin on an area at the top of my finger, I can feel in the tip though. (see pic.)

I can go to a clinic, or call the Ontario health line or whatever it is called, but am lazy. Any ideas as to why? I hope I didn't sever a nerve.

I think thats normal, it's a cut afterall. Just say what your heart does, if it wants to go to the doctor, YOU RUN.

Disclaimer - I'm not a doctor, so don't take this as an actual diagnosis or anything.

You probably did nick a surface nerve. However, if you can still move the digit and have sensation at the tip and especially the pad of your finger, then there isn't too much to worry about. I have a similar situation with a surgical site from a few years ago. I can't feel sensations on the skin, but I can feel sensations in the tissue under it and I have no loss of muscle control.

So, all in all, do you REALLY NEED to feel things with that part of your finger? If not, don't worry about it and just go on telling good stories to your buddies. If it is of significant concern to you, consult a qualified physician at your earliest convenience.

Good to know I'm not alone in this occurrence. Thanks.

you probably didn't sever a nerve, but most likely the tissue around the cut area died and that's why you can't feel it.

Several years back I cut my thumb (on the knuckle where it meets my hand) on some glass. To this day I still have no feeling in that area. Actually, strike that, I get intense pain if I push really hard on it, but besides that it's numb. If your injury is anything like mine, you'll probably just have to learn to live with it.

Given you get our wonderful free Ontario healthcare, it couldn't hurt to talk to a doctor about it, just in case. It's always better to have and not need then need and not have.

By the way, whereabouts in Ontario are you, if you don't mind me asking.

That sucks, but with physio you should recover, my grandfather had half of his hand cut off and subsequently reattached, and he is good now, so hopefully you will be too.

The GTA, you should come to Escapism: Toronto if you are close enough.
