I've always liked the idea of having your own castle, as a sort base of operations in games (RPGs mainly, though other forms of open-ended games might work too). Some games feature this, the ones at the front of my mind are Neverwinter Nights 2 and Baldur's Gate II, but I was wondering whether some of you had other suggestions for game that feature this (castles, not houses), and what your opinion of it is.

Maybe if Mario had his own castle he could lock Peach inside it so Bowser can't instead, it'd save a lot of hassle...

Oblivion has a downloadable castle. It is a nice castle.
It has seekret rooms.

Overlord had one, dunno about the sequel. I didn't like that place too much, though.

IIRC, Dragon Age will have a castle you'll be able to own. Supposedly the downloadable PC Collector's Edition will have it right off the bat to compensate for the lack of "physical swag."

Or, you know, he could just kill Bowser, for good. Oddly enough, he's done that plenty of times and the big B is still kicking.

On topic: I really liked the Overlord's castle you got in Overlord (natch). It was a pretty nice hub as far as gameplay was concerned, but I think in the later sequels, which will inevitably come, the game'd be a lot better if you could customize your castle a lot more. Like adding parlor rooms full of zombies or a torture chamber or two, if your inclinations are that dastardly.

Secret passage-ways, definitely. A dungeon, a contingent of guards defending the place. Maybe some magical/steampunk R&D department that gives you new stuff?
Also, I'd like a random event to be an attack on the castle. By anything. Zombies, enemy soldiers, whatever.

There is some downloadable content for Oblivion (Battlehorn Castle) that gives you the ability to aquire the deed to a castle, wich you then own after the completion of a small quest. Hard to recall but I believe the quest is just to kill the enemies attacking the castle. Point is it is aquirable from the very start of the game and serves as a rather nice base. Unfortunatly it starts of rather bare and is relatively useless for anything than being a rather ostentatious loot storage facility, without the application of a large amount of gold.

Yeah. It's not a proper castle unless it has secret passages.

What about Garry's Mod? You can make a castle there. Hell, even a WALKING FORTRESS!!

...If you have about 30-40 hours to spare.
