I am having an issue with DRM and I hope someone out there can assist me as I have tried everything I could get my hands on to this point.
As part of the steam gift giveaway thing I went ahead and filled out my wishlist with anything that looked reasonable. One of my friends saw this list and gave me a game from it: From Dust. This wasn't exactly something I was going heads over heals for, but it looked interesting and I thought I would give it a try... only I can not.
From Dust is one of Ubisoft creation, and because of it comes with the 'Ubisoft Launcher' which is just a form of DRM. A form they promised wouldn't be included with their games in a future but, surprise surprise, they lied. This installer needs to be running before you can even open the game, and requires a internet connection prior to use if you don't hack it apart.
My problem: I can not even get the damn thing to install! I need solutions to this problem before this becomes yet another example of a legitimate customer turning to a pirated version just to get around the DRM that is preventing him from playing a legitimize copy. A horror that has been repeated so much online, and never seems to sink through the head of publishers that they are only hurting legitimate users with this DRM bullshit.
Things I have tried:
Reinstalling the game
Reinstalling the game while running as administration
Manually installing the launcher
Manually installing the launcher as administrator
Unlocking the 'true administration' account, yeah that is one of windows little secrets, reinstalling game and manually installing the launcher from within this account
Changing the ownership of the whole C: to a user account, reinstalling game and manually installing the launcher
Changed the ownership of the host files, opened to remove all the Ubisoft related code lines... they where not present to begin with, the installer doesn't even get that far before it crashes.
Even tried re-downloading the installer, in case the problem was there, but all copies crash the same way.
This thing simply will NOT install. Every time it does the same thing, gets past the user agreement then the whole installer program vanishes, doesn't even have the decency to give me a crash report.
So, ideas?
