Hej!

It's not your typical review. It's not about good, bad and ugly. It's not about... Aw hell. It's about personal, subjective first impressions. And fun if applicable.

Picture this : rather old gamer finally amass enough money to buy a little better than shitty equipment and plays video games he gathered for years. Some titles are new, some older. Light, action, let's roll !
Oh, one or two things more... Minor spoilers and plenty of broken english ahead. :)

Fallout 3.
MAN, THIS IS AMAZING, IT'S LIKE A DREAM COME TRUE ! Successor is here, time to bury old versions. Fallout 3 i love you, i'll play you to the end of times. Omg, Ultima Prime is awesome, damn, people from NMA can eat sh*t, go team Shishkebab, VATS is amazing, so are DLCs... Wtf ? End already ? Oh. Ummm... Well... That was unexpected. Ummmm...

Fallout 3 : NV.
It's shit. I don't feel compelled to follow main storyline. Not a bit. Reaching New Vegas takes too much time and can't be done without levelling a little. Unfortunately, interior is shitty.

Transformers : War for Cybertron
Wonderful ! It's exactly how i envisioned Cybertron while watching "Transformers" cartoon on Sky One channel. Interesting : i vaguely remeber Brawl and now he seems to be one tough motherf... um, tough guy. Too bad there's no Astrotrain. Ah, good days, good memories. Fine game, too short.

Portal 2
O F*CK ! Everything is falling apart ! Oh, there's portal gun. Now we're back in business.
The game ? Let's just say it's Portal 1 + much better story. I liked Portal 1, i like Portal 2.

Just Cause 2
Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Jumping with that hook of yours mr. Whoever you are was fun until "Hotel" episode. From then it's simply ridiculous travesty of physics.

Dead Space
In space no one can hear you scream. Especialy when you realise that your true enemies aren't hordes of Necromorphs or manipulative corporate bitches but unreliable controls and Isaac suddenly forgeting that running indeed saves lives. On the other hand, very climatic, very innovative game. I almost shat myself a few times. :)

Dead Space 2
Naaaaaaaaaaaah. Maybe it's because i don't understand why i need to revisit some areas. Maybe because DS2 recycles Dead Space's tricks and adds nothing really new, but i think it's boring. "Press E to kill this little shit that rapes your face while all other are patiently waiting their turn". "Running... so hard... must drink Red Bull..." Also : Isaac was way much better as silent protagonist. No, really.

Mass Effect
Cmdr. Sheppard. Yoooo tryin' too hard with yooooo soldatesque. Believe me man, some false tits seem more natural than your character. Also, what's the purpose of various upgrades and micromanagement in this game ? I don't see any effect. Btw : this blue chick is fat and ugly. Sheeesh...

Deus Ex : Human Revolution
A little bit of Deus Ex, a little bit of Invisible War, altogether pretty decent game. Too bad it's so short and that there's no real impact on the world. Really, no matter what Adam Dent... i mean Jensen survives or does changes shit. It's like two different realities - Adam's missions and the one he lives in.
I like this game very much, but don't expect to replay it ever again. No hope for changing anything equals no need to play it again. Too bad.

Trackmania 2
Only one question : where am i supposed to go ? Official maps are mostly stupid and too tricky for my taste. Fan made : no better.

Amnesia : The Dark Descent
NO. "No" to protagonist trying to emulate xxx actors. Shadow ? "Uhmmhmhmhmhhmmmmmmm". Something moves ? "Ooohohohohohoooooooooooooooo". NO ! I feel like controlling naked guy running around with his dick in hand and that's not what i'd call "fun". NO ! Die, begone !

Beyond Good and Evil
Despite its childish graphics, it's a very good game. Who would think that "paparazzi" minigame could be that fun ? Good story. A little generic, but really good story.

Test Drive Unlimited 2
Racing game is about racing not walking around. What is it supposed to be ? SIMS on wheels ? Get the f*k out of here !

Trine
Very good. You wouldn't like to hear how we swear and curse while playing it, but no matter, it's terrific despite some more difficult obstacles. Why aren't there more co-op games like this ? There's also one serious problem : broken controls. Year 2011 and developers have problems with mapping gamepad ? WTF ???

Dead Island
Environment not interactive enough. I understand that not every objcet is supposed to be moveable, stackable, and so on, but... No, screw it. It's 2011. Game should be at least a little similar to its trailer.

The Last Remnant
Let's see... Intel 2600k + 16 Gb ram/1600Mhz + fast hard disc + nVidia 560 Ti Hawk. Not cutting edge equipment, but not that bad either. Deus Ex:HR runs very fast on max details. "TLR" too, but every fan screams begging of mercy, temperature rises faster than. :|
And the game ? Pretty, stupid, boring, linear, generic. Sometimes it takes few minutes of boring, unskippable chit-chats until game lets you to do something. "Game" my ass !

Dirt3
Surprisingly good - so says my wife. Unfortunately - there's some kind of problem with GFWL offline account. Let's google... Oh. I'm not alone. Damn, it's pretty common problem. Meh. I understand a few misplaced textures, glitches or such, but inability to save games ?
Honestly, guys, how can you demand to be taken seriously if your products are so indecently flawed ?

Drakensang 1
Isn't Drakensang some kind of spiritual successor to Realms of Arkania DOS games ? No matter, let's play.
Why... It's very pretty. Damn, i like it ! Once more "damn" : camera is acting like bunch of monkeys swimming in a lake full of LSD. Oh well.

Drakensang 2
Ditto.

Rage
Doesn't work. F*ck you Bethesda, f*ck you ID software, f*ck you testers, f... Waaaaita minute. Oh yes, now i understand the title. Ahahahaa, good one ! You really got me there. But seriously : f*ck you.

Risen
Yawn. What ? Ummm. Is back of protagonist covered with glue ? How it's possible for him to carry wooden branch like that ?

Witcher 1
...oh wow.
Instead of impressions :
I am not sure when to use "its" and when "it's". I mix British English with American, Engrish and god knows what other mutations. Times other than -simple seem more mysterious than Taman Shud Case. But i play english version of Witcher even though it's originally in my own language. Like a boss ! ;)

STALKER series
Each and every part of this game is good, however they all share same problem : unfulfilled potential. Like i said : good games, but in comparision to original visions of Strugaccy brothers it's somewhat childish toy. Emissions are f*king amazing though. I really felt like chased by hell or something.

Necrovision
When the f*ck i'll be able to play ? F*cking unskippable trainings... Aw, screw it. Uninstall, proceed to next game.

Red Alert : Uprising
gReetingz my old fRiend. Damn, this is how dwarves should really speak !
Game ? Simply awesome, and i don't like RTSes at all. :)

Gothic 4
Uhhhhhh... That awful whispering voice... "It's not too late"... I know, this is obviously scripted event. Hmmm, nice one sir king. Not only running like a youngster but also rolling in that shiny armor of yours ? They see me rollin' they hatin... Yea, i hate this game a little.

Cryostasis
F*ck me... It's wonderful. Cow's execution is more convincing than every pro-vegetarian argument i've heard ever. Whoa...

Civilization 5
I don't like strategy games, but this is awesome. Let me have just one more turn... :)

I like Risen, but if it's not for you, it's really not for you. And if you think the slow start and glue on the back is funny, wait till you get the glitch where the weapon is invisible and enemies appear to be taking hits strictly out of politeness. ;)

I thoroughly enjoyed your ADD reviews and approach to the games. Why give one review, when you can give fifty? As far as the English is concerned, "it's" is an abbreviation for it is, while "its" is used for possession.

Who knows, maybe Astrotrain will be in the upcoming sequel. I'm already psyched for it on account of Grimlock being in it... although I'm not sure how they're going to work his Dinobot alt-mode into the canon, considering we're still plodding around on Cybertron.

I'm lost.
Are you an old person who ecstatically writes about video games? Or are you a younger person who's bored out of his mind and is posting nonsense on a forum?
And what are we discussing? Old people playing video games, or the impressions of video games on an old person?
Pick one. There's really no difference.

It's a little strange i guess. On one hand developers put numerous elements simulating "real world", on other they are perfectly ok with heroes running around in full armors, with weapons sticked to their backs. Weeeeeeird.

Do not believe everything that is written in personal profile. ;)

It's good when people pay no attention to grammar for the sake of discussion, but it's even better when they correct most obvious errors in polite manner. Thank you sir. :)

WTF did I just read? I´m not gonna comment on your opinions, their your opinions in fact, but tell me, what was that for? Are you some oldman that loves videogames and is shoving it in everone´s faces, or are you a youngster who´s just testing how much shitty nonsense he can post in these forums? Either way, that was just unnecessary.

Re: 'potential'
Sir, I would encourage you to expand on your Strugaccy reference, as I do not know the name. Are you referring to 'Roadside Picnic' by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky? (Its a very good short story!)

If you are my age, you may remember that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. ShoC was considered by many (including me) to be Vaporware, owing to its much prolonged development cycle. This turned out to be because the developers were trying to cram more features into the game. Many more features than they could get to work properly by the release date - and that's saying a lot for a game that was notoriously buggy after release. GSC has been very magnanimous to the Stalker modding community, allowing access to the code and changes to the game engine itself - on condition that no mods are used for personal gain. What has happened as a result is that modders have resurrected - and fixed! - much of the content that was cut from the release version of Stalker ShoC. These are now freely available as Stalker:Oblivion Lost and related mods that are actually fixed versions of pre-release game builds. At the moment, there are versions of the NARODNAYA SOLYANKA ("poor man's soup": the product of many mod contributors) Stalker game modification in which the Zone has grown to be at least 5 times larger than any retail version.

TL DR; Given the direction that the developers took, it's hard for me to agree that potential is being wasted. Besides, to get closer to 'Roadside Picnic' in a videogame, you need to use cutscenes to drive the story. Thus far the Zone is cutscene-free (aside from CoP, but I presume that was to be console-friendly). Let's keep it that way. No cutscenes, but lots of zombies.

Also: I had not heard of Cryostasis before. Thank you for the plug.

Edit: Oh, alright, there are also *little* cutscenes in Clear Sky. Dammit.

My bad. Please excuse me - my translation of name "Стругацкий" may be somewhat misleading. :(

I tried a few mods, including "Reloaded" for "Call of Pripyat". They make whole experience better (kudos to authors), however, it's still far from what i remember from original story. I feel that people, mutated animals and gathering of resources are dominant, while anomalies and artifacts are just small distractions, while it should be complete opposite.
Of course, there is a risk that game wouldn't be that interesting - afterall there's some magic in wielding Dragunov sniper rifle, but still...

"Zone" is pretty amiable, stable. There are parts that one should stay away as far as possible, but still - i don't like idea of people living there.

By the way, thought it were no doubtly brothers that invented concept of "Zone", they weren't only ones to use it in SF novels. For example, this author :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kir_Bulychev
...also flirted with similar phenomenon. I feel that STALKER games are closer to his vision of "Zone" than to Strugatsky's version. Just sayin' :)

There is no fault, sir. I commend you for being able to translate... uh... as you said.
Speaking of which, translation is the one aspect of Stalker modifications that has been lagging far behind the highly polished retail games:

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l273/karlmonster/ss_karlmonster_09-01-11_01-41-35_l02_garbage.jpg

Although, I suppose that could add to the atmosphere. The military, bandits, mutants, and even the landscape of the Zone were already trying to kill you. Obviously, the Zone is also affecting people's minds.

You know what Fallout3 needs?

Hobos.

Mendicants. Squatters. Wanderers. People with no visible means of support.
Yeah, the wasteland is a horrible violent place, and a lot of people that just weren't careful enough are coming soon to a luncheon menu near you. However, when you clear out a building of supermutants or giant ants, the building stays empty - for no apparent reason. There should be 'career stragglers' wandering in for shelter.

I love FO3, but the more time I put into it, the less engaging it is. Having some sort of fluidity - like hobos moving in - would help.

I would have thought it was the successor to Gal Civ II:Dread Lords?

I have GC2:DL somewhere. I seem to remember uninstalling it after about an hour of trying to figure out what I was supposed to be doing. That was a shame, because GC2:DL was released on schedule while S.T.A.L.K.E.R. ShoC's release was pushed back - again. Wiki says that GC2:EU was a Europe-only release.

I met in that 'Dark Souls is the Spiritual Successor of Demon's Souls' sort of way.

Yeah, it is, but it runs on any PC.
GalCiv:EU (or gold, w/e has all the expansions) is - for me - THE 4X game.
It's not perfect, but it's as close as it can be.

I've started a bigger map game at night and had my alarm go off because it became morning, and I was so lost in the game that I didn't realize it.

I've yet to find another game that does that for me.
