Hi there. Long story short I really enjoy cartoons that aren't completely targeted towards the youth demographic. IE - Gargoyles, Titan AE, etc.

I recently watched Avatar: The Last Airbender and loved it. I'm not a big fan of really crazy out there Anime. I liked Avatar because they created a very simple yet elegant universe around the 4 elements, and it had great character development and a well paced story. They took time to explain some of the finer points of the universe they created, so even some of the more "mystical, magical" stuff was still grounded on some form of logic or realism.

I've tried watching stuff like Dragonball Z and whatnot and it's always seemed way too kooky and random for me. I don't want to watch anything really abstract either.

So can anyone recommend me something to watch? Can be a movie or series, doesn't have to be strictly anime, can be a cartoon. Keep in mind what my tastes are please when recommending.
When you recommend me something, try and explain why you think I'd enjoy it if you can.

Thanks !!!

As I get the impression you like Shounen Anime, try:

- Fullmetal Alchemist (the original series first, then Brotherhood)

- Gurren Lagann

- Soul Eater

- Hunter X Hunter (once again, the original series first)

you my friend are really picky then, so anything crazy you might not like. a good example of a crazy anime is Gurren Lagann, but with this anime, just throw your brain away and enjoy it. next, give Death Note a try. an even more realistic anime would have to be Black Lagoon.

western animation on the other hand, is also good, so give samurai jack a try(but remember to turn your brain off with this one also). finally: Thundercats(2011). with what i've seen so far, it looks pretty awesome, but YOU might turn the thing off straight away, due to the fact that there is not a single human in sight

Shounen Anime means "Anime for boys" (Shoujo being "Anime for girls").

Quote from anidb: A style of anime and manga intended for boys, characterized by high-action, often humorous plots featuring male protagonists. The camaraderie between boys or men on sports teams, fighting squads, etc. is often emphasized. Unrealistically attractive female characters are also common (see fanservice), but are not a requirement. The art style of shounen also tends to be less flowery than that of shoujo.

If you like character development, you could watch Durarara and Stein's Gate.
Both are really well made.

I'll also say what everyone else is:
watch Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. It's probably my favourite anime of all time, because it's simply perfect.

Right, I'm going to be the hate filled pedant.
Avatar isn't anime.

I'd recommend watching Death Note. Good place to start as for many people it teaches that anime often have bad ending, even if I liked it. It's the anime I can get people who hate anime, to watch and enjoy.

I can recommend cowboy bebop to just about anyone.

Also if you're a musician, watch beck: mongolian chop squad. I can definitely see how it's not for everybody, but I love it.

Samurai Champloo! I just discovered it. So badass. Seriously, it's like...swords, and sword fights, and then woah! So, so, so badass.
I really liked this one as well :)

On Topic:
Anime: Full Metal Alchemist, Full Metal Panic, Soul Eater, Death Note (maybe) and the one from the guy above (Samurai Champloo).

Cartoons: Samurai Jack

Quote from MyAnimeList FAQ:

Q) I think Avatar should be added to the anime database.
A) No, Avatar is not an anime.

Anyhow, I don't think that Avatar is an anime either. I also don't see the hate that would come of it.

A more interesting discussion would be what anime is, exactly, because its meaning is changing over the years. And now some 'non-anime' are difficult to differentiate from 'real anime', especially the Korean-Japan collaboration ones.

Baccano!, it may seem all over the place with switching between 4 different stories but by the end everything has come together. Plus it's just fun as hell to watch.

Durarara!! is it's successor and while not having the same bombastic story telling style as Baccano! it's still a ton of fun to watch.

Time Of Eve: a very short series about human android relationships set in a small cafe where no one knows who's a android and who's a human. It uses it's time to examine how we interact and treat androids.Usually focusing on one of the cafe's patrons; The fourth episode Doll of Eve is probably one of the most heartbreaking things ever seen in anime The director of this has a talent for packing in everything in a very limited time frame. In fact this is his longest series to date at 6 episodes, most of his other things have been small one off projects'

Haibane Renmei: A show about angels in purgatory, maybe I'm not sure. The show leaves it self up to interpretation. Either way the show doesn't say much but gets it's point across very well. Great atmosphere building and a couple of excellent character arcs make this series awesome.

I have no idea what qualifies as Anime these days, nor do I really care to get into the debate.

As I said, doesn't have to be anime strictly that you recommend to me, can be cartoons as well.

Also I am a musician...can you tell me more about mongolian chop squad (without spoiling it)?

Hmm... Well, there are some that I would recommend not specifically because they suit your tastes, but because they are overall great examples of what an anime can be.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (the original series is optional, but really, all it will do is make you say, "Wow, Brotherhood is good, ESPECIALLY compared to the original!"

I'm joking, of course, the original wasn't bad, by any means, but it left a bitter taste in my mouth and several dozen unanswered questions, that number being only multiplied by the movie which followed.

Code Geass (It's a very stereotypical recommendation, but it's popular for a reason)

Angel Beats! (This one would probably be great regardless. It's touching, humorous, and not too full of itself. The characters are all unique and loveable, and situtation they're in is odd but understandable; there are questions raised but they're more fuel for fanfiction than anything lol)

Bakemonogatari (This on is harder to recommend in that it is largely dialogue-based while also being not in English, so there will be a lot of very important subtitles; however, if you're a sucker for a great story like I am, then you'll love it. It also has a very interesting art style, though inconsistent in a good way is probably a better way to describe it)

Yumekui Merry (Well, if you've seen it, then you'd recognize my avatar as who seems to be an early antagonist until motives are revealed and they begrudgingly [at first] become allies. There are good characters, though there's also one major question throughout the series which refuses to be answered. Frankly, the anime was okay, but it was short. I'm still following the manga, and while releases are slow, I'm enjoying it)

Highschool of the Dead (Okay, this one is hard to recommend. The first time I tried to watch the series, I thought it was fucking stupid. The gratuitous fanservice is what ruined it for me. However, going back a few months later, I found it to be rather enjoyable, even if the fanservice was fucking bonkers >.<)

Shinryaku! Ika Musume - Hey, don't hate. It's fucking adorable, and I found myself laughing more often at this than I have at any Family Guy episode since South Park made fun of them and they got all butt-hurt about it and started "fixing" everything South Park made fun of without realizing that the reason a lot of people liked it was that it was very random and barely held together much like an animated stand-up comedy routine -.-

My girlfriend and I just found Eden of the East. It's not exactly action-packed, but it's a clever anime.

Also, naked people. (In the first episode, anyway.)

Deathnote, Deathnote, and more DEATHNOTE!!!

Other good stuff:
Hellsing
Black Cat (Never saw the anime, but I love the manga)
Lupin The 3rd
Desert Punk (Can be good at times, some episodes....not so much)
Insert really obscure one here to make me sound more knowledgeable on Anime than I really am.

And of course, Cowboy Bebop

Seriously though, watch Deathnote, It's universally accepted as pretty freak'in good or better.
