The problem with indie games is that they are mostly crap. Its not worth if for me to dig through the piles of shit for the one that does not suck.
Dunno; Sturgeon's Law strikes AAA games as well at a technical level. It's kinda hard to find AAA games that doesn't require to get patches to glaring bugs (where the fuck is QA these days?)

I like indie but honestly its hard finding good ones that are worth spending the time and money to play. For every 1 good indie game there's another dozen that are crap. I would rather spend the money and time on a AAA game knowing I'll enjoy it.

On another note I canhonestly say I don't like spending $60 on new games like I used to.

Why people insist on labeling games based on their dev team size or the amount of resources they have is mind boggling.

The term AAA or Indie do nothing to tell you what kind of game it is or if you would like it. These terms are meaningless fluff that should be removed.

INSTEAD! We should add new genres to the ones that have existed for years now. We need a new genre for games like Gone Home or Dear Esther.

I do not care about the tags (that dont really mean much nowadays anyway, since Activision is technically Indie) you put on games. I care that the game is something that i want to play, that i would enjoy. Looking at my historic thrend however, the games i like to play tend to be mostly large budget titles and never the indie shovelware. I havent played Pappers Please, it does not interest me. I havent played Fez, Bastion, Esther, Gone Home, whatever else i dont remmeber now. They do not interest me. I havent played TellTale games. They do not interest me.

What indie games i played tend to be mostly space simulator games, because it looks like those games are indie-only nowadays. My favourite genre is turn-based strategy however, which means that there is one indie i love - Paradox. However Paradox has became AAA title maker as well now.

SO yea, You may not understand us Yoshida, but we have our reasons for playing games we like and will continue doing so.

They are simulators. Of walking.

The Witcher 2 cost $9 million...and was arguably as "AAA" as any game out there if not more so.
Thats because AAA is not a measure of money, its a measure of quality. Any game made for any money can be AAA if its of top quality. Its just that traditionally an statistically majority of high quality games were made with large budgets. This may change in the future, some alrge ocmpanies certainly lost thier AAA capabilities, but right now were still there. And theres nothing wrong with some people wanting to play only top quality titles. not everyone has enough time and money to buy and try everything.

What an incredibly stupid question. Here's your answer Yoshida: because they like that sort of thing.

I tend to stick to "AAA" gaming myself, (if we're using that term to indicate big budget games from more established companies) and I very much enjoy my military shooters. I've branched out into other genres naturally and I have tried some indie stuff, but I've found the AAA stuff to reliably produce hits for me.

I don't even think I've played a AAA game this year. Maybe DS2 counts though.

I think there's a sensible discussion to be had about the popularity (or not) of 'indie' games.

But having read this a couple of times, isn't basically the idea on sale here that "We don't have (many) AAA games on the PS4 at the moment, but it's okay because we've got indies' (also with a plug for Little Big Planet). Once the military shooters roll around in October, Sony'll be telling us how great they are again.

Don't get me wrong I love any good games, no matter their size or budget, but if I'd bought a next gen console I'd want games that show what they can really do, rather than something which could have been, but wasn't, released on a last gen console. (Wouldn't have to be, in fact preferably won't be, a military shooter) I think Yoshida spinning this so anyone who is interested in AAA releases (and lack thereof) as being a Dudubro shooter fan is somewhat disingenuous.

I haven't played Triple A games released in the same year in a while now. I guess you could say I agree with the sentiment.

Whether I agree or not, this might not be the smartest thing of Yoshida to say. Most people here probably have a large scala of games that they like playing, but a big chunk of the gaming populous really only plays one type of game and don't care about anything else.

I don't know how smart it is of the head of Sony Studios to say 'Hey, you people who only play that one game, I don't get you'. People tend to take offence against getting judged for their personal tastes.

People only want games that have crazy amounts of money spent on marketing, shocker that one.

I will pay any game that i find interesting from super expensive mmos and AAA games to the smallest game made for £50 by one guy.

I tend to gravitate AWAY from AAA games. I have no interest in realistic military shooters and GTA/GoW clones, slogging through unskippable cutscenes, and the day one patches that still leave a host of bugs that will be patched years later or never.

The games themselves tend to be the most expensive to buy, come with several editions with content exclusivity (some that notably lack the actual game), cut content, and on and on to drain your wallet for something that on average only has MAYBE 7 hours of actual gameplay. Often with large amounts pointless profanity, obligatory sex minigames, and of course product placement because its an M rated game marketed towards 12 year olds that actually get off on it.

Assuming it of course has multiplayer you then have to keep up with all the new map packs or wonder where the hell everyone is, and deal with all the modded tools going around in god mod and raping your inbox until you block them.

The only AAA games I genuinely liked, even though they suffer some of the aforementioned to some degree are the Elder Scrolls/Fallout games, Borderlands, and a few others.

I don't consider a game like Zelda, Soul Reaver, or Dark Souls to be AAA, as I have such a negative connotation of the term. If anything I would label them S rank lol.

I play mostly indie games these days. My 3DS is full of them, and I am always looking for new ones on pc.

They are cheap, or even free and have provided at least 10x the enjoyment of something like Kingdoms of Amalur which cost several fortunes to make.

Now that Shovel Knight is out, about the only game currently known to be in production that I'm excited about No Man's Sky. Which is an indie game, I think?

Bloodborne and Hyrule Warriors will both be good too, but there is simply no way in hell I'll be able to get a Wii U and/or a PS4 with my lack of money for things like food ._.

Unfortunately indie games have racked up a reputation (at least in my mind) for being shallow 1 dimensional gimmicky games, or they're often just puzzle platformers which personally I would bet a lot of people are sick of.

There are tons of amazing indie games out there, but for every great game there are a couple of games just not worth my time. I keep a look out for great indie games (subscribed to a couple of indie game channels on YouTube, plus TotalBiscuit) but rarely do I see one I'm really interested in.

I don't get it either, most of the newest big productions are so mindless that I just can't enjoy them at all. That said, there are also a hole lot of mindless indie games.

As the previous poster said, I'm also one of those who is sick of puzzle platformers.

Sweeping generalizations ho!

No, not everyone wants "big budget military shooters". You work in the fucking industry and have seen plenty of titles other than military shooters make it, so propagating that bullshit is clearly a PR move: "hey, we're not making a military shooter, buy our poor little game if you're one of the millio...I mean few people who doesn't like those!".

That said, yes, people have a preference towards triple A games in general. Just like people have a preference for Audis over Yugos or big budget films over tiny indie ones. More money is more potential. Yes, that potential is often squandered, but so is the potential of indie games. If you're wearing your indie rose tinted glasses shouting "so many AAA games suck!", you might wanna try and peek over to the amount of non-AAA games that suck as well. I'd wager the amount is the same, or very likely, greater.

Yoshida, it's about whether the game interests them, not about what label they have on it. Maybe they just weren't interested in Resogun?

Hmm, I'd say I definitely trust AAA games more to deliver on content and graphical quality. I personally like all kinds of games and have recently had great joy from finding unique indie games that stick with you long after playing them (stanley parable, Bastion, limbo, Chivalry, etc). But I can understand why people prefer big name, big title games like COD, Bioshock, inFamous, GTA, etc. I mean, holy crap if I haven't gotten the value of 20 games from a title like Skyrim.

I tried a lot of Indie games. The majority was disappointed, too boring, too short or too unpolished. They just don't survive the hype. Is like... Ubisoft in miniature.
